Remember when people didn't get upset over the littlest of things like who someone's attracted to or making a joke involving race? Yeah, good times... But seriously, this age of Political Correctness we're heading is one of the most mind numbing things that's happening right now. With OFG's thread about Tumblr and it's "issues" and Steve's recent post about Ellen making a joke about Usain Bolt, it makes me really question if people really know what they're talking when they have a "problem" with something like someone making a race joke. Oh and as a bonus, here's this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3744983/Teachers-told-t-call-students-boys-girls-insensitive-transgender-children.html Edited by breaker335, Aug 17 2016, 01:17 PM.

I've seen both sides to be honest. While you're right that sometimes people can get offended over things that don't really warrant it (the Ellen/Usian Bolt joke being a good example), I've also seen people use being "overly PC" as a way to justify them being a jerk. There are people who want the world to be nothing be sunshine and rainbows, and there are people who want to just be able to do and say whatever they want and get away with it. |

I don't agree with policing others on what they can and cannot say (which is basically what this is about), but I do think that if you say stupid, racist, or hateful s***, you should be ready to face the consequences of that, whether it be getting fired from your job, losing friendships, etc. We're coexisting on this planet; we should at least be humane enough to show others respect when it's deserved. A lot of hate speech, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. stems from ignorance, and I can't exactly sympathize with that. Go out and educate yourself. It's really not difficult. |

Oh yeah, if whatever you're saying is out of malice, then you should definitely get in trouble for it. But if it's just a little joke, I really don't see an issue. |

I think that you should be able to joke about whatever you want, you just have to be aware that not everyone will find it funny. However, not finding it funny does not equate to it being offensive. So people need to know their audience, and audiences need to know it's just a joke they don't find funny. Regarding things like terms for groups of people, I think people have a right to say 'please don't call me that' and it's polite to acquiesce to that type of request. However, it shouldn't be a massive 'oh my God I can't believe you said that' issue, just a quick 'hey, could you use a different term please?'. |

PC is becoming way to much of a problem. First, most people think not saying racial slurs is being political correct. Not true. If we look at a history book 20-30-40 years ago, we would see how being decent to the feelings of others is a basic virtue of humans. Decency and PC are being confused with each other and is heating this debate. Being too PC is becoming a problem in today's world because it obscures the root cause of the issues. It's not crime, it's poverty. It's not a riot, it's rage, etc. Only when you identify the problem are you able to create a solution. |

I can understand that a little bit but it isn't a huge problem in real life. It does get annoying in the NFL. Not to defend the other unsportsmanlike penalties which certainly re-iterate the No Fun in NFL, but taunting above all others is one I have never gotten. Verbal abuse is self-explanatory in why it is penalized. Excessive celebrations, while harmless and have nothing to do with directly impacting the opposition, are somewhat understandable because they may slow down the game and the use of props can be otherwise disruptive. Taunting on the other hand is......taunting.....it often occurs after or near the end of a play. Golden Tate against Rams The article above proves to me that the only people who have an issue with taunting are fragile children. Please, this is professional sports. If feelings are so easily hurt then why don't we just have participation trophies? Why not scrap the Super Bowl for the Pro Bowl where everyone gets a trophy and the MVP of the league is the nicest player. It's a 15 yard penalty, which is substantial. But could be even more harsh punishment to come.... Negating TDs And I can only think the NFL would look even more childish if this happened. Already many fans face harassment from security for yelling too loud at a stadium. Perhaps the future of the NFL IS players in bubble-wrap and all spectators wearing a muzzle? You call it good times but the way I see it is that the people who were being made fun of finally have enough power to create change in society and now the people who think the way you do are not happy because your words are no longer acceptable. At time I would agree that being politically correct goes too far. I don't think people should be overly sensitive to insults and such to the point that they get enraged. |

I don't know how long this will last, but I do think PC is a losing issue for the left. People won't take this shit, and that, in part, is why Trump is so popular. Speaks his mind and doesn't back down. Respectable. |

I don't really get that. Speaking your mind can be respectable, but being a complete asshole isn't. |

Speaking your mind is respectable if you actually know what you're talking about. Trump, however, is an idiot. |

That's true, but usually when a famous person or company or whatnot is accused of being racist, or __phobic, they back down and kiss up. Trump doesn't do that. He has that "I don't give a f**k" attitude that I quite like in a person. |

The problem is what people dictate is acceptable or not, some of it is just ridiculous. Like how people go nuts over an innocuous statement like "Hi, you look good today" being a "micro-aggression" that destroys the lives of women because oppression and gaipsfhrfrffg It's a meaningless passing greeting but people need to police it because they think other people ruin their lives and not their own silly mindsets. And then there's the whole "cultural appropriation" thing where you'll get people literally attacking white people if they have an afro or dreadlocks etc etc You're not allowed to have your hair a certain way because some culture "owns" it and thus you're insulting them all. Ridiculous. (of course such a thing makes sense when people are say, mockingly wearing a hijab)
Even though he's a complete tool that's the one thing I like about the guy except for his super sexy fake tan. It's nice to have someone who doesn't bend over for everyone's petty little grievances. Being offended is typically a choice these days, people just look for somewhere they can cause outrage. "That white guy is driving a black car...he's trying to emulate slavery!" Haven't seen that one yet but give it time. |

If you offend or upset someone with the things you say, the proper thing to do would be to apologize. Trump seems incapable of apologizing or admitting that he was wrong. He's an egotistical ass. |
