You all keep saying the planet is over populated, but is it really? Think how much food is wasted every day just on Supermarket shelves. That could feed a lot more people if need be. Next question is about space. We can feed way more people but can our infrastructures support them? I think that many world governments need a kick up the backside in this area but it's not beyond them to create the required structures to support larger populations. So in relation to that argument, no I don't think it's selfish to have children. I think that raising a child is one of the least selfish things you can ever do. As long as you do it responsibly of course. Especially since we are keeping our race alive by doing so. Emmeth mentioned China. That's a great example of how not to control population growth. They're allowing two children to be born now instead of just one because the system created a huge labour problem in the long term. It's quite complex what happened but it's available to read about on the internet. Basically it turned out to be a bad idea. |

I don't even know how one would go about arguing that it is selfish. |

To some people it might be. For me? No! Some people (including myself) just don't want any kids (unless it's pets/animals). |

I want pets and kids, but if my life works out with a certain someone I probably won't be having any--at least not for a long time--because of my partner's overbearing OCD when it comes to pets. I feel that his constant doting, freaking out over our pets or kids' well-being, and panic episodes would drive a wedge between us. I think that makes me pretty selfless actually. |

I think it's more selfish to have kids at this point. Until they make scientific advancements to the point where babies/toddlers are no longer necessary in human growth, I'd be fine if humans were no longer able to reproduce. But I'm completely cynical about humanity as a whole. I will never have kids and I feel like a superior person for that.
