I was a Christian for 17 years. At 18, I became an anti-theist. Now I just consider myself an atheist, but I dip into anti-theist territory when necessary. Most of the time I just don't care. Arguing over religion is usually silly because most people are adamant in their beliefs and won't listen to things like logic, science, or rational ideas.

I don't really remember who it was on this forum that really got me thinking about atheism as a possibility, but it was someone here. Maybe Sam or Mitas? I don't know. If it was you, step forward.

Well it definitely wasn't me. I'm a nonorganised polytheist.

I border between Agnosticism and Atheism. I'm not sure if you would account more to the lines of Agnostic Atheism or Agnostic Theism...or something else entirely.

Simply put I'm someone who doesn't believe in a divine force as I need supportive evidence which is difficult as it is. However I also understand that there are things science and rational thought simply can't explain at the time so I need to keep an open mind. It's like Extra-Terrestrials for me.

Are aliens real? The universe is pretty big the probability level is kind of high. However until we get actual proof I can't just say, yes there are aliens or no, aliens don't exist we are the only creatures in the universe.

My Dear Melancholy,

Christian or Deist whatever I lay in. Don't really pay attention to it unless I'm praying before I eat. Normally I just live.

Was raised Christain, ended up becoming agnostic along the way.

And on the talk of god, I think Futurama has the best interpretation of god:

Then there's this really good quote:

I find it silly to completely close your mind so much that you firmly believe there's no such thing as a god so I could never be atheist

I don't mean to start a debate, but I don't think it's really about closing your mind so much as it is learning things that completely contradict the idea almost entirely.

So now what makes you guys believe what you do?

Me, it's because my good friend/mentor showed me a lot about the Bible and how it works.

What makes me believe, or rather not believe, is that I don't really buy into a lot of the logic holes that religion entails. Like I said though, I don't really care (as in I don't spend much time thinking about religion), and the reason behind that is I don't find it particularly important to how I life my life.

I don't want to start a debate or cause a ruckus but I do feel the need to express myself here.

I don't think there's a problem in having a strong spiritual value in something. This is what I think, if you're going to be religious, do it in a way that feels right, not one that was shoved into your head as a kid. I feel one should follow the positive aspects of the religion, not the deity behind it.

As example, think of Christmas. I'd be kind of surprised if any of you believe in Santa Clause. However I have a feeling a lot of you celebrate it in some way. You enjoy the spiritual aspect, giving to others, receiving gifts, learning about the history of the holiday and the good that it can bring. Maybe you take it a bit more literally and you hold the high spiritual value of religion that comes with it.

I don't need religion because I can get these values in other places and hold strong to them. But if you can feel a high value through your religion, fine.

And if you are religion, one thing I strongly recommend is that while this is fine, accept the weaknesses and flaws of your religion and how you can improve them. There are things in the Bible for example that simply do not hold up today. This is why science makes such great marks throughout history, because its always adapting and improving to fit the modern era.

Crazy Awesome Legend

An all powerful being is too contradictory. It should in theory be able to create an object which it cannot destroy but then not being able to destroy something means it isn't all powerful.

Secondly all religious texts are mangled and bastardised versions of events which either happened very differently according to tangible historical evidence or never at all.

To use the bible as an example I know well, The walls of Jericho were said in the bible to have been destroyed by the sound of trumpets. But in reality Jericho never had any walls to begin with. The story of Moses parting the red sea and escaping Egypt with a band of Jewish slaves. There's no records of such slaves existing at that time and we know that the Egyptians were very good record keepers/administrators because we have actual documents from the time detailing things like the price of materials for building the pyramids and the wages of those who worked on them.

So that's why I don't follow religion or believe in an almighty God. It's not that it's something beyond my understanding but rather that it shouldn't contradict like it does.
