Our curriculum was literally that at some point the government wanted results of our condition and we had to run for 12 minutes.
We did that one time, and besides that the teacher had to make us exercise in whatever way he saw fit.

I remember we had to do 'bleep tests' where you would have to run from one side of the gym to the other in between 'bleeps' that got shorter as you went up a level. I think you had to get a certain score, but I can't remember if they were 100% strict in enforcing it because I was lucky enough to always beat the minimum score.

Sometimes in PE, particularly with football the lesser able of us basically just sat at the other end of the field and hung out whilst everyone else played football at the other end. Because the ball would never come to us.

Yeah, uh, gymnasium in American education is just exercising... :| Wow. That's an interesting contrast.
Yep, they call it Physical Education and all we do is learn how to play sports and run. What do you guys do?
This is why yall need to add in Athletic Conditioning to your curriculum. It's mainly weightlifting and strength training at that. Best decision of my life, screw doing nothing but run and play sports.
You can really do those things at school? Seems to me like that budget could be spent in a better way.
Since PE didn't really do anything for any of us besides have fun (with the only cardio being on Wednesdays), I'd much rather do something with that time that not only helps bolster my confidence, but also has a physical impact on my body in a positive fashion. It did more for me physically in one year than PE did since I was in elementary. If anything, I would say scrap PE and make Athletic Conditioning the norm. Atleast with the latter it's cohesive and actually gives students results.

All PE's ever managed to do for me or anyone else is get unnecessary injuries due to dickhead ballhogs that try to play field general in any of the sports we tried. Literally a few months into AC and I was doing so well that I was outperforming some of the more athletic types in PE.

I don't really have many regrets from high school. High school has probably been the best time of my life so far. I hung out with friends daily, I was very active and spent most of my days playing volleyball, participating in games and tournaments, etc. I was offered a college volleyball scholarship but turned it down so that I could focus solely on academics. I did all that dumb stuff like prom, homecoming, dating, and I enjoyed it at the time, but it just wasn't me. I was lucky to have friends who shared common interests. In one of my classes, I became famous for my DBZ drawings. Being the idiot that I was, I drew Gohan on my desk, but I didn't even get in trouble because my teacher that it was good. haha

The only "regret" I can really think of is that I was pretty shy in high school, so I didn't venture outside of my friend group. I started to open up more during my senior year, but by then it was a little too late.

PE shouldn't just be one thing though. It needs to encompass as many different sports and activities as possible because not everyone is going to like the same thing. Plus, you play down sports like there's no benefit to them at all. No benefit to you maybe, but there's definitely benefit there. They can teach teamwork, discipline, and hard work. It can also boost confidence if you find a sport you're good at. It can also give opportunities to socialise inside and outside of school.

P.E. for my school was "here's a ball, split yourselves in to two teams and play football".

P.E. for me was pretending I forgot to bring my kit so I could sit on my own on the bank.

Issue of course being PE curriculums in our state and likely country as a whole only having about five or six different sports a year they rotate as a focus with a test at the end of the month that just ask you what the rules are to a sport.

The benefit of PE loses its luster after it being a thing since elementary. And if we want to argue High School's a new experience, then after a year or two then you already get what you've already experienced before and likely are stuck with the same people you had a year or two prior (unless you're in a large school).

All of those benefits you've listed are applicable to weightlifting. Have you not heard of a spotter? The way we did things in AC was we split into four-five different groups of 4 kids each. And the group with the largest increase in strength at the end of year won. I have never experienced such a positive environment that emphasized bettering yourself as quick as possible. Nor have I ever received as useful information in regards to proper dieting and understanding the body than in that class.

Every kid I know of in every single period not only had fun, but also increased their physical capabilities much more than they could've by just playing sports all the damn time but without any training aspect to it. The only thing that was out of the blue for PE was the free-days on Friday where you had a choice of Volleyball, Basketball, or Dodgeball. The issue of course being AC also had free-days on Friday as well. And when we did cardio, we did it at a much more intense rate than PE did it at.

The best thing too, it doesn't matter how fat or skinny you are in AC, because it's all ultimately a group effort to better each other, helping each other be it through being their spotter, or being on the side yelling for them and nearly blowing up in joy as they go up another 5 pounds. Rather than missing a shot in basketball and having everyone and their mother b*** moan and groan and call you trash (which happened with surprising regularity). Not to mention biases against picking fat kids or kids with no athletic build.

Atleast with AC, we didn't get to pick our group mates, they were decided for us, and we had to make it work. As a result, I've socialized positively more in AC than I ever did in PE.

What you're basically saying is "because I didn't get anything out of sports, and I got a lot out of weightlifting/cardio, everyone should be doing what I did". You don't see an issue with that?

No, I'm arguing based off of what I've seen and my personal experience. There's a difference, a big one actually. PE is not a fun time atleast here for those that aren't already involved in after school sports. The biggest indicator of this is the fact that barely anyone actually does the sports that are assigned and the fact that most kids are walking around the track on free days instead of playing any of the three choices.

But your experiences of PE are obviously biased because it sounds like you didn't get much out of it. Like I said, just because you didn't get anything out of it, doesn't mean that the same goes for everyone. Everyone is different.

I'm also from the UK, so our experiences were probably different regardless.

Well considering this started because I was responding to someone saying they should cut AC because it sounded like a waste of time, I was just saying why that was wrong and why I personally feel that it's a superior class to PE. It's as simple as put in the work, and if you don't want to be there, either the teacher will see and talk to you or you can request to be taken out of it. If you're not in a physical class for the physical aspect, you're in the wrong class. The difference is AC allows you the option of switching that hour for something that doesn't require that and keeps the social aspect, while PE forces you to stay in that hour. From what I've seen, most kids weren't in PE for the physical aspect anyways. It's as I said, only the people who were already playing sports that were consistently playing the sports given.

Across the pond here it seems to me that our schools don't give a s*** and have let it become a glorified lunch hour. Which defeats the purpose of a PE class.

Because I don't like it when people express opinions as if they are the be all, end all, only way to do things. There's a difference between saying 'I don't like this' or 'I like this' compared to 'I don't like this and it should be stopped and replaced by the thing I like'.
