Curse was a move that for Ghost Types, took off half their health and each subsequent turn the opponent would continuously lose 1/4 of their health for the remainder of the match. For non ghost Types, it increased Attack and Defense and lowered speed, which with Torterra being kind of slow as balls as was, this wasn't necessary that bad. It basically meant I could turn Torterra into a walking tank. As Tropes would say, a Mighty Glacier.

If its any consolation Mitas, I still prefer Torterra over that useless penguin.

Torterra is one of my favourite Pokemon. I will defend him to the death.

I did start another Nuzlocke, on Y this time. Chose Fennekin and my first capture is a Pansage. I'll update properly when I've made more progress.

Well Platinum's done. Came in, thought I would spruce up Mark Zap with a few charges and even gave him Thunder. Charge of course boosts up electric moves as well as Special Defense and even something like Magneton wouldn't want to take a spruced up Thunder and I could get my water type to deal with Steelix and Bastidon. As usual, had the whole thing planned out...

And then Magneton used "Metal Sound" which drastically lowers Special Defense. So now I'm up the creek without a paddle, every time I raise the special defense up 1, he lowers it down 2-3. I get a Thunder off and it does its damage but it doesn't do enough to stop Mark Zap from getting trashed. Things might have been good if Bryon didn't chuck a Hyper Potion on him and well considering Magneton knows Thunderbolt and most of my cast consisted of Water/Flying types and a level 27 Pontya...

You can guess how it all went down.

If only had had that Infernape...Fighting Fire...4x effective against Steel...or in this case 4x resistance!

I'm not sure about the stat boost, but Charge's effect on the next electric move doesn't stack, it just doubles the power of the electric move used in the next turn. Bad luck with losing the Nuzlocke, you got further than last time though (and further than I did, although that's not hard :P).

Yep, I did get further. Perhaps I'll try starting out with Chimchar. maybe I've underestimated the little chimp.
---

EDIT:

Well I tried using Chimchar. Of course I knew he'd be useless against the first gym but I got myself a Psyduck, got it leveled up, was at a nice level, water gun's a good rock killing move and it was immediately killed by Cranidos, the cheating head butting dinosuar and it all went south. I now decree that Chimchar is the worst starter, give me my turtle back.

Pokemon Ruby Nuzlocke Challenge: Adventure Log #5
Tragedy Strikes

It's been... rough going.

First things first, we took on Watson, and my rookie nature caused us some fatalities. One of the trainers in the gym had a Zigzagoon, and my line of thinking was "Oh, a Zigzagoon in an electric gym. That's strange. Oh well, easy exp. for Lazuli!" Of course, there was a reason this Zigzagoon was in the electric gym; he knew Thunderbolt. Lazuli got zapped and KO'd in one hit. Bye-bye, Lazuli. You gave us a good run. R.I.P.

Next we faced off against Watson. I used Koala against the two Magnemites, but he also had a Voltorb. The rookie me didn't remember that Voltorb almost always uses self-destruct when he's in the yellow. I had been using Pelador (now a Gloom), and didn't switch her out for someone else to take the hit, so she got wrecked. Bye-bye, Pelador!

This is where the game really starts getting harder for me. We beat Watson, of course, but now all of the trainers we fight and wild Pokemon we encounter are mostly fire types or strange gen 3 Pokemon that I'm not accustomed to seeing. We don't have any water types with the exception of Coolest, who still doesn't know any water moves (or anything useful at all, for that matter), so it's a struggle. We run into a double battle with a Roselia and a Graveler. The Roselia is easy pickings, but the Graveler is a f***er. He uses Rollout to KO both Squall AND Buuberries. Bye, girls... I love you.

So now we're stuck with a mostly new team. Pretty much everyone we knew is dead. If you guys have any advice for me on the upcoming gym and what-not, lemme know, cause I'm in for some s***.

These are all the new Pokes we've added to the team. I'll have to train them up quickly to replace our fallen comrades. :'(

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

From left to right: Smokes, Bex (v.2), Mitas, and Brofist.

And here's our current team:

Posted Image - Koala, Lvl. 27 Posted Image - Coolest, Lvl. 21 Posted Image - Bex, Lvl. 18
Posted Image - Brofist, Lvl. 17 Posted Image - Mitas, Lvl. 18 Posted Image - Sam, Lvl. ??? (she's in the daycare, but probably around lvl. 18 or 19)

I find it funny that everyone is a girl except for Coolest. But seriously guys, give me advice. I'm quickly losing the streak I had. :'(

The next gym is Fire. I'm surprised Tentacool doesn't learn any Water moves early on. I just checked and it learns Bubblebeam at Lv. 25, so might be a good idea to train to that level. Geodude might be handy too with resistances to Fire and Rock & Ground moves. Slakoth evolves at Level 18 so might be worth getting him out of the Day Care.

Oh, if you haven't gotten the EXP Share yet you can get it back in Rustboro City. It's a long journey back but it might be handy in training up weaker Pokemon.

Skarmory is a cool 'mon, shame I won't be much use in the next gym.

Apparently Tentacool evolves at level 30. It might be a safe bet to focus on training Coolest to level 30 and then try to solo the gym. Once I get Bubblebeam, training him shouldn't be such a pain in the a***.

Broswablu for the win! :) Hope it becomes a Brotaria later on. :)

I've played Emerald so I can't really say how the fire gym will do on something like Ruby. Slugma shouldn't be a problem, unless you just get really unlucky. It's kind of a crappy Pokemon with some pretty crappy defense. From what I an see, she still has that Torkoal which is an annoying little thing. It loves Attracts and Overheat's pretty darn powerful. It's the one thing that always gives me trouble when facing her.

In fact, if anything you should use your time battling the Slugma's to up the stats of any of your Pokemon to deal with the Torkal later on. As I said, Slugma's kind of weak and it really shouldn't be a problem.

I'll hold you to that. We'll see how it goes. I want to at least get everyone to 25 minimum before I even think about setting foot in the next gym. :p

Sounds good, also If this Torkaol is anything like in Emerald, it also has "Slam" so have some Paralyze heals at the ready. I think in most cases, Flannery isn't too tough but if she gets her options off she can be a pretty big pain, especially if you are underleveled.
---
---

I've tried my hands out on one more Platinum Nuzloke but I'm doing something a little differently. It's not really cheating but I've decided to use the Action Replay to instead choose my own starter. That of course being my main buddy "Mudkip!" And we're going to see how she fares off against the world of Sinnoh. Of course I can't do this until after I get the calculator app at Jubilife. So I picked Piplulp (so the rival will still have the advantage over my starter as usual) and just did things as usual until we finally got my Mudkip.

And well, to make a long story short, we just now got through the Water Gym and it was a crazy battle. The first plan was to get "Zelda" the Luxray, recently evolved I might say to take down the Gyarados. 4x electric weakness, I didn't realize how freaking strong that Gyarados was. A single waterfall took out half of "Zelda's health." and it was faster as well. In that moment my trump card against Gyarados had been pretty much stamped against me.

But I had a back up, a delicious little Leafeon named "Osalon." while it took a few blows from Leafeon to put the Gyarados down, including having to deal with the Hyper Potion, Osalon managed to take down the beast without having to worry about any significant blows to it. I had thought that would be the tip of my troubles, but I forgot about the dangers of Floatzel.

Floatzel knows Ice Fang so, I simply could not have "Osalon" up there. I sent in Abriel, the Marshstomp in. While it wouldn't have anything supereffective, I assumed it would at least be able to take any hits. I think I underestimated the gap difference of 7 levels! Attacks that were pounding into the poor Marshstomp, my girl was taking a heck of a beating, barely bringing down its health with a few Mudshots. However those Mudshots helped to bring down its speed several times.

The only chance I knew of what to do was to get an attack off by "Zelda" but her health was not in a position to do any fighting. I needed to get her health up. It was a risky position, but I threw in 'Heredis" the Crobat. If that monster got off its critical Ice Fang, we were done, and we might be done either way. I took the chance to heal up "Zelda" and then...

The Ice Fang came.

And through miracle we survived with 8 health left. Quickly switching back, Zelda took a quick hit but because of the loss of speed and damage done by "Abriel" one good Shock Wave finished the job.

The only thing left was Quagsire. So we finished things up with"The Light" ...AKA "Solar Beam" with Osalan.

And thus after a grueling battle, we have gotten our next badge.

Platinum Update:

Sorry for the double post but I feel it is imperative that I talk about the fairness of this game. :)

So I was strolling my way up to the little town where you have to use Defog and all that (the name escapes me at the moment) and of course for those who know, there are two annoying ace trainers with a Gyarados and Raichu respectfully. I have it planned out though, Marshtomp is basically immune to anything Raichu throws at it and neutral damage to anything Gyarados throws out. Meanwhile Zelda is neutral to anything Raichu throws out and pretty much resistant to anything Gyarados throws out, plus 4x electric effective.

But as usual, I had forgotten that Platinum is a sorry excuse of a game and hates me, and somehow the Gyarados, only two levels higher, ended up killing "Zelda" the Luxray with "Aqua Tail." I don't think it was even a crit either, Luxray just got murdered...by an attack that it is resistant on. So either way I've lost my electric cat as well as my main thing against bird Pokemon.

I send in "Osolon" the Leafeon...and it is immediately "Ice Fanged" so i got to get him out. My only options now are just to send in "Rederim" and just slowly go through the match. Of course we win but is worth it at the loss of our cat?

The answer to that is no, because apparently Cyrus though it would be best to take his bird and have it kill my horse. So now not only am I without an electric type, I have now lost my fire horse, the thing that was going to help me take on the Steel Gym.

So now I am stuck with Abriel, Osolon and Heredis. We recently caught a Gastrodon, he'll be a decent meat shield I guess and just beat Barry. Now in a more triumphant light, I would like to give a good amount of credit to "Heredis" the Crobat for literally soloing that entire fight. I popped quite a few "X-Defends, but I'm still proud of the guy. I'm glad I had "Ariel Ace" because Double Teaming Staraptor is the worst.

So here I am now. At this point my plan is to go to Iron Islands, go through all the stuff and get that Rilou and turn it into a Lucario. A very daunting and more so, time consuming task as is. but at this point, my options are rather limited. What's worse is that, even if I get through the Steel Gym, I currently have nothing to go against the Ice Gym up in Snowpoint.

Crobat and Leafeon aren't doing nothing and Swampert (yeah got her evolved) is at best hitting for neutral damage. this is bad enough, but because of the way Frosslass works well. For one it's part Ghost and if it has any Ghost moves, that's going to be a problem for my potential Lucario, being a Fighting Type an all that. But its also one of those "Double Team" people and we all know how lovely that is.

So yeah...things are looking kind of tense right now.

is grinding allowed on nuzlockes or what? cuz i've demolished most of the games i played as a kid and teenager by just grinding exp for two pokemon and they'd cover each other and that was that.

the last time i played i deliberately underleveled myself and used strategy instead of grinding which made it more fun, but it wasn't like super hard or anything and i dont recall any of my pokemon ever getting KOed.

With something like Platinum, you need to grind. Most of the gym leaders, Barry and Ace Trainers not only have several options with them that makes it very difficult to try to go through the game with a limited number of Pokemon. For example Crasher Wake, the Water Gym has almost his entire team set to deal with his own weakneses. Gyarados is already a naturally powerful Pokemon with an insane Attack stat to begin with, Floatzel has Ice Fang which helps deal with grass Pokemon and Quagsire of course is completely immune to Electric type.

And he'll switch them around. And its the same for a lot of the Gym Leaders. Roarke's Crandios has a hellish attack stat that can put even Water and Grass types in danger. Gadenia's Roserade has an heck of a Special Attack and her Pokemon before love to bring up Sunny Day and Reflect to help boost their attacks as well as defense. Maylene's Machoke knows Rock throw/Rock slide (not sure which) which puts issue on Flying types. Meanwhile Fantina's Misagamus' Shadow Ball is just...a killer move altogether.

It gets to the point where almost everyone has something to deal with their own weaknesses and the AI unfortunately is smart enough to capitalize on it. Grinding is something that's just necessary. If I miraculously make it to the Elite Four, it will not surprise me if I'm 15-20 levels under. Platinum doesn't joke around.
