It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Big Update:

Our hero's journey to conquer the Sinnoh Pokemon League continued with a detour. Team Galactic, the local group of hoodlums, had been causing a ruckus at the Valley Windworks and I was enlisted to quell the trouble. Their leader employed a Purugly, ugly not only in name, but also in nature and appearance, but with the help of the newly evolved Hannah the Luxio & Morty the Staravia, and their Intimidating stature, Jake the Machop Karate Chopped it down to size.

After that quick detour, I headed to the Eterna City gym, picking up a host of new Pokemon on the way, the crown jewel of which being Alvin the Aipom, who was attracted to the Floaroma Meadows honey tree. We travelled hastily through Eterna Forest before finally reaching the local gym. With Fire type Winston the Monferno, and Flying types Morty and Ragnar the Zubat, the gym battles were the proverbial cake walk. Ragnar even managed to prove himself against Roserade, valiantly taking down a much higher levelled opponent (his first sign of greatness, but not his last). Two badges and we were well on our way to the Pokemon League.

Another detour was to be had when Team Galactic once again decided to wreak havoc. Perhaps a harbinger of things to come, our first death came at the hands of a X Special Attack-boosted Kadabra. Hannah bit Kadabra, but it managed to hang on by the skin of it's teeth. Out-sped and looking at an extremely powerful opponent, I was forced to switch. However, the Kadabra's power was such that whomever switched in would surely face their doom. I looked through my team and my eyes fell to Alice the Bidoof, only here to Cut our way through the trees blocking the exit. With a heavy heart, I sent her out and watched as she quickly met her doom. Morty was then sent out and dispatched Kadabra with a Quick Attack.

Up next was the latest Galactic Executive, this time with a Skuntank. Morty led the charge in hopes that an Intimidate would soften the Skuntank's mighty blows. Our hopes were slashed when a critical hit wiped out Morty in one blow. Jake was sent out to try and take it down, but was Poisoned early and, despite forcing the use of it's Sitrus Berry, had to be switched. Winston tagged in and after a gruelling battle that included a Super Potion or two, we came out with the victory. The cost, however, was the death of Morty, our longest serving non-starter. A sad day, but we must soldier on.

Looming on the horizon was Fantasia and her ungodly Mismagius. Fears of being severely underlevelled forced our team into training. Little did we know, we were about to be rocked to our very core by tragedy after tragedy. First up was Winston, our beloved starter Pokemon, felled by a Misdreavus' Psybeam (completely slipped my mind that it knew it, I was testing out how much damage Winston could get off if he had to be used against Mismagius). We weren't given any time to mourn his loss as the losses kept piling up. Baxter the Buizel to the Selfdestruct of a trainer's Geodude. Jake to the Selfdestruct of a wild Geodude. Hannah to a critical Shadow Ball from a Haunter in the gym. Our team was decimated, with only Ragnar the Golbat left standing. However, Ragnar was about to prove himself to be a God among Pokemon, shouldering the responsibility of keeping this Nuzlocke alive. I unloaded all my stat boosting items on him as he face Duskull, boosting his Attack, Speed, Special Defence and Critical Hit ratio one time apiece. A Super Potion brought his health back up to max, and like a bat possessed, Ragnar annihilated all who stood in his path with barely a scratch to show for it. Three badges, but our journey appears in dire straights.

A battle with our rival, Barry, shortly followed and Ragnar once again shouldered the burden, this time with the help of others on the team to switch out for healing items and removing stat decreases. No more losses and we walked out with the victory. With Ragnar our only battle proven Pokemon, filling out the rest of the team, be that by training existing captures or finding new ones, was now of paramount concern. But with Ragnar on our side, anything is possible.

Pretty long update. I was honestly ready to quit when I had all those losses in such a short time. I even just went straight into the battle with Fantina instead of levelling up other Pokemon because I wasn't bothered about losing. But Ragnar pulled it out of the bag not just once, against Fantina, but again against Barry (again, I just jumped into that battle expecting to lose). I really like the idea of Ragnar being this battle-hardened veteran, especially since he's one of my favourite characters (that's who my avatar is) and Ragnar the Golbat is living up to the name. I didn't include any other members of my team because I'm unsure who's going to make it up yet. I'll start my next update with the team I decide on.

Ragnar taking care of business, got to work hard, earn that Crobat. But man that's a lot of losses, like I said Platinum is no joke. Your next gym is the fighting one so thankfully that's one Ragnar can handle but be careful, that Lucario is no joke and one of the gym leader's Pokemon does know rock slide I believe.

Yeah, I always lose a lot of Pokemon in Nuzlockes (well, I always lose) because I just get careless or don't train enough. You think I'd learn by now, but I just get bored of continuous grinding so I'm almost always at a disadvantage levels wise (plus, I like to have a team of 6 whenever possible in a Nuzlocke too, so harder ti divvy out experience).

I'm confident going into the next gym. Ragnar is already level 29, so should be able to handle all the non-Lucario Pokemon. And, team spoiler alert, I do have a fire type for the Lucario. It won't be easy since Lucario is a powerhouse, but I think I should be able to get through it.

I gave up nuzlockes because of the grinding. I would never really lose the actual nuzlocke, but I'd lose one mon, and then anything in my box would need to be trained up 20 levels, and I couldn't be bothered so most of my runs ended from that.

Yeah, it is tiresome. I've committed myself to completing one though (although obviously not enough to actually grind more than a couple levels at a time).

I just kind of stick with around 4 Pokemon to grind up now a days and then just have 2 in the back for...well either HM slaves or I need someone unimportant to take a hit. There's also cases where I won't catch anything until I'm at the Gym because I know I can catch something that's closer to my starter or something instead of saying catching a few level 3-4 Pokeon and painstakingly grind each one up.

And this was honestly incredibly helpful in my Soul Silver run because I didn't have to spend so much time grinding. In fact until I got to the Elite Four, I didn't have to grind much at all and even at that point, it wasn't much.

Speaking of Soul Silver, I've taken a bit of break before heading to Kanto and started doing an Emerald Nuzlocke a few days ago. I'll write up on how that's going in a bit.

Still, having something literally 4x weak against electricity surviving the strongest electric move is just too much.
It's because the Thunder wasn't STAB and Dragonair has a paltry base 70 Special Attack. Not to mention, Gyarados has pretty good special bulk in general.

EDIT: Not trying to come off as rude or condescending, by the way. I was just explaining how Gyarados survived the Thunder.

I never cared for Nuzlockes, personally. I really only like Pokémon from a competitive aspect.

Too much rudeness...banned. I hope you learn better next time. :)

I just didn't expect to walk into the Dragon's Den, have a Dragonair survive an Ice Fang and then drop Thunder like the hand of God on me. It was close, it dropped me straight to the red at the time.

Speaking of competition, we should probably hold another little tournament.

I'm the opposite. I much more enjoy playing the games themselves than just battling. That's why I gravitate towards Nuzlockes, because it's a way to play through the games without it being too easy. I also enjoyed going through and completing each game with a team of Pokemon I'd never used before when I was collecting all the available legendaries for my Pokemon Bank. And I like monotype challenges too. Competitive battling is alright, but it takes away the most fun aspect of the game for me: crafting a team as you go along the journey.

Update:

Our attempts to create a new team around Ragnar the Destroyet began by venturing to routes both old and new for new captures, along with scouring the box for any potential warriors. The sixth spot became a bit of a curse, with no less than three Pokemon falling to the whimsy of the Nuzlocke Gods (R.I.P. Roselia, Cranidos and Jolteon, your lives were too short). It wasn't the most formidable team, but it was a team nonetheless:

Posted Image Ragnar, Lv. 31 Posted Image Sasha, Lv. 26 Posted Image Alvin, Lv. 25
Posted Image Thorne, Lv. 25 Posted Image Torrent, Lv. 24 Posted ImageFinlay, Lv. 18

(Seriously, my catching luck was that bad that I had to have a God damn Finneon and a Budew).

So with this ragtag bunch of 'mons in tow, Ragnar and I set out to take on the next gym. Now a battle-hardened veteran, Ragnar swept through the battle with ease, laughing off the Machoke's Rock Tomb. The Lucario was left for Sasha the Gyarados, the most promising of the new team. A couple Dragon Rages and we added one more badge to the collection.

The new badge opened up multiple new routes, but those new horizons still held familiar feelings: Alvin the Aipom was felled by a Horn Drill. The little guy never stood a chance. However, these new routes opened up more possibilities to add to our team and we finally managed to capture some credible Pokemon, with no offence to the current team. With only Sasha the Gyarados and Thorne the Ponyta surviving the cull, we finally had a team that looked capable of seeing this thing through. Up next....the Water gym and a chance to enter into the second half of the gym challenge:

Posted Image Ragnar, Lv. 32 Posted Image Sasha, Lv. 29 Posted Image Thorne, Lv. 30
Posted Image Quinn, Lv. 29 Posted Image Walt, Lv. 33 Posted Image Brian, Lv. 29

Don't let the levels fool you, Ragnar leads my team in 4 of the 6 stat categories.

I did. It caught me completely off-guard. It's level 30 too, at that point in the game it pretty much out-levels your whole team. And f*** off is it 30% accuracy, I got hit twice without missing, once by a Metronome Clefairy and once by the Goldeen.

I guess its time I updated on the Emerald Nuzlocke, as I've gotten a lot done since.
---
---

Our journey first started off with obtaining...AKA personally picking...the Mudkip Utopius who would be vital in overthrowing the rock gym ahead. We collected a few new friends including Kettle the Poocheyna. A bit before running into the forest, we caught ourselves a quick Maril named "Abby" as well as a Wingull named...I really don't remember. We also caught ourselves a little Wurmple called "Cagosa" who would prove quite vital throughout our journey. For it was this Wurmble and her evolution Dustox which would prove greatness later on.

In a shocking turn of events, upon entering the forest, we ran into a Slakoth. Catching "Lazina" the thought of getting the slow but powerful Slaking seemed quite nice. We arrived in Rustboro and easily took care of Roxanne and her silly excuses of Pokemon.
---
---

But now it was time to take the real first challenge. It was time for Cagosa to prove herself against Brawly and his fighting gym. It couldn't really be helped but Cagosa was simply someone who wouldn't be on the team for long. Bug Pokemon are live fast and die young. But her purpose was obtained here as she burst through the fighting gym with her gusts and because of her typing, tanked through any attacks these poor creatures threw at her. Even Brawly's Makuhita could not stand up to the Bug of Doom.

Another badge down and Cagosa's usefulness proved even further as she helped fight against May's Groyvle. Our journey took us soon to the third gym where Utopius soon took care of the foolish electric Pokemon. Could nothing stop the team? It wasn't long after before Kettle evolved into a Mightyena and Lazina turned into a Vigorath. Previously as probably should be mentioned, Utopious had become a Marshstomp.
---
---

Up to the volcano we went, catching ourselves a fiery little Sluma along the way. This was also the time where we parted ways with our cute little Cagosa. She had proved useful during the start but unfortunately she would be falling behind as we went on. I hope Singe, the Slugma will be able to fill her shoes. Our next catch was a shocking one, a powerful Seviper who Singe was sent out to tame. It was a fierce battle but in the end, the giant venomous snake was soon ours.

And then it died the next battle against a Barbaroach which used Magnitude 9.

...and so our journey goes on.

I've started a Pokemon Ruby Nuzlocke challenge in my free time at work. So far I've got about three hours logged and have made a little bit of progress. I'm using the "no potions during battles rule" and adopting the duplicates clause. Everything else should be standard.

I made my boyfriend choose a number between 1 and 3 without knowing the context, and he chose 2, which means my first companion was Torchic AKA Koala.

Posted Image

Koala and I made our way up to Route 101 and met Buuberries, a cute little girl whose hobbies include randomly picking up things.

Posted Image

On Route 102, Bex joined the team, a bashful Seedot with big dreams. It's too bad she's a pain in the a*** to train because her only useful move is Bide, which (foreshadowing) leads to pain and suffering.

Posted Image

Things are going smooth so far. No troubles yet. And I'm starting to realize that this challenge is a serious grind. But with confidence, we continue to move forward. Lazuli joins the group on Route 103:

Posted Image

And then we head for the Petalburg Woods, where we bump into Sam... and quickly find out that she is a lazy bastard.

Posted Image

So far the team is looking excellent. We've got a fire type, a water type, a grass type, a normal type, and an annoyer. I couldn't have asked for a better starting set-up. Squall joins us on Route 104 and ends up evolving when training in the Petalburg Woods. It is worth noting that Squall is also a female. Girl power.

Posted ImagePosted Image

I'm grinding things out, making sure that I'm prepared for the line of trainers leading up to the next city, when Bex is tragically killed in battle with a wild Wurmple. It was a goof on my part. If I had equipped her with an Oran Berry or pulled her out instead of getting cocky, I would have saved her easily, but the poison from Wurmple + Bide combo got me. R.I.P. Bex...

Spoiler: click to toggle

I get through the trainers rather easily and make my way to the next city. Then I start grinding, catch another Pokemon, save the game, and it doesn't actually save, so I have to start back from the forest. That kind of irritated me because I lost quite a bit of grinding, so no more playing for now. Looking forward, I feel like I'm going to have to rely heavily on Lazuli for the first gym. Be prepared to take one for the team, buddy.
