So close yet so far.

I'm going to try again. The only thing that really stopped me was being a few levels under and its easy enough to get a Magikarp and evolve it again. I think if I watch my step and maybe get a few more Potions than I do normally, I can do well enough. I got quite far...far more than I've ever gotten in Platinum that's for sure.

Welp, started an Emerald run again but died at exactly the same spot, Brawly. His Makuhita is ridiculous. Level 19 is stupidly high, my closest was a level 17 Combusken and that's only because I had to evolve it before the first gym battle so it could learn Double Kick. A critical hit Vital Throw took out my Ralts in one shot and after one Bulk Up he was able to destroy the rest of my team. Plus, as if level 19 and Bulk Up isn't bad enough, it has two healing items. Ah well, what's one more Nuzlocke failure :P

I usually don't have much trouble with Brawly but I won't lie and say there's not a bit of a challenge. There's barely a place to grind outside of the gym considering I think the only people are 2-3 fisherman, and I'm pretty sure most of them just have Magikarp. I must say though, kind of pitiful now but congratulations on catching a Ralts. It's not exactly easy catching one of the rarest Pokemon in a Nuzlocke. Had it lasted, having a (I assume female) Gardevior would've been awesome.

Yeah, I was really happy about that. Like you said, pretty rare, so it was a nice thing to happen. Shame it wasn't sturdier though.

Yeah, the Ralts line, at least female is kind of like Kadabra, great special attack (especially once you evolve it) but not so great defense I believe.

I'm re-starting Soul Silver and I'm adding two specific rules.

1.) I'm picking my starter. I like to use Cyndaquill though I do think Totodile is a fundamentally better Pokemon but I just point blank refuse to use Chikorita. It's one, if not perhaps the worst starter of any generation as well as probably the worst grass type but Johto is not the place for a Grass Type. It several Gym and Elite Four disatvantages, two of which include the first two Gyms and it has zero advantages outside of it beyond Chuck's Poliwrath. It's just an awful Pokemon.

2.) I'm getting a Scyther. I'll play by the regular rules, one Pokemon per area but I love my Scyther too much not to get it. It's the balls awesomeness of Pokemon.

Soul Silver Update.

Well I'm in Goldenrod and just went to the Bug Catching Contest. I said before I was going to get a Scyther regardless of what Pokemon showed up...but quite amazingly Scyther was the first Pokemon to show up so, all good there.

Current Team:

Posted Image(Cruiser, Lv. 19) Posted Image(Delta, Lv 21)
Posted Image(High Order, Lv 18)

UPDATE:

It's a day of celebration! We just defeated Clair though we still got to get that badge cause Clair's a sore loser. I may have gone a bit overboard when I shoved 10 X-Attacks and 10-Special defenses down Verakoi's throat but screw that Kingdra, had I not I'd probably wouldn't have won. Once I get all the stuff done in the Dragon's Den, I'll handle Lugia and then it's off to the Elite Four.

Dear lord things almost went south in "Dragon's Den." Arrived at the first trainer you have to battle (the only one you have to battle I believe) threw out the Dragonair and really a good Ice Fang from Verakoi the Gyrados should've handled it. But for some reason it decided to miss and what does the Dragonair use?

Freaking thunder of course!

Had Gyarados not used Intimidate earlier, there's no doubt it would've been dead, dropped all the way down 30 HP. Sent in Typhlosion, of course it knew Surf so I nearly lost that guy, again thank you Intimidate. Thankfully I still had Cruiser the Amphros and after a bit of tediousness managed to get past that heart attack. I swear I would've been beyond enraged if I had lost after getting past Clair.

Intimidate lowers Attack and Thunder and Surf both use Special Attack, so they would have survived regardless. Congrats on the progress though, 8 badges is a great achievement, most I've ever done is 7. Hopefully you can go all the way.

Still, having something literally 4x weak against electricity surviving the strongest electric move is just too much.

UPDATE:

I'm at the Elite Four though I won't do anything yet. Got to do a bit of grinding now. I'm confident I can handle Will, Koga and Bruno.

Karen I'm iffy about and Lance is out of the question.

I was gonna take a break from Nuzlockes, but decided to give it one more go. Pokemon Platinum, prepare yourself to get Nuzlocked all over your face:

My journey started when Professor Rowan saved my a*** from venturing into the deep, dark grasslands and bestowed upon me my starting Pokemon: Winston the Chimchar. We almost fell at the first hurdle when Barry and his Piplup decided to try and Growl Winston to death. His attacks were doing miniscule amounts of damage, but luckily Barry went one Growl too many and Winston Scratched out Piplup's innards.

We began to fill out our team, adding first Morty the Starly and Alice the Useless Piece Of s*** (or as they're more commonly known, Bidoofs). After completing various tasks around Jubilife and heading to Oreburgh City (not before handing Barry his a*** to him one more time), our team began to take shape with the additions of Hannah the Shinx, Ragnar the Zubat, and, finally, Jake the Machop. After a little bit of grinding, we strolled into Oreburgh Gym, blitzed through Roark's grunts, before facing down the man himself. The battle was surprisingly easy, with the newly evolved Winston vanquishing Geodude and then Jake wiping out both Onix and Cranidos in one hit (Cranidos with a critical karate Chop). One badge down, but the journey has only just begun.

Nuzlocke's are addicting. You try to stop and you end up doing another. Still a Platinum Nuzlocke, I wish you the best of luck on that. Seriously yeah I come close to losing just in the first fight with Barry. I don't know if the same for Black/White or X/Y but Platinum was the only Pokemon game I know where the the game never gives you any potions whether from your PC or in Soul Silver's case (I assume so in the original as well) Elm's Assistant and it still let you at least grind up a bit before facing your rival.

Here it's like, good luck kid and as you saw, Barry's a tedious piece of scum who just wants to drag out the fight and turn it into a battle of attrition. What should be a moment to give the user time to understand battle mechanics and get used to the game just chucks everything at you. Can you get a potion anywhere before the battle? I mean I've looked and I haven't seen anything.

Well at least with Monferno, Morty (and if you can get Wing Attack) Ragnar, the grass gym shouldn't be too tough. Don't put your guard down, Platinum doesn't let up on weakness.

As for me, still grinding. Pokemon are in the 40s but I got to get them up a bit higher.

Just checked Bulbapedia, no potions (not even hidden). It is a pain, especially in a Nuzlocke. 9 times out of 10 you don't need it, but it's handy to have as a backup just in case.

Well the faithful day arrived...we all went through a lot, gained a lot and lost a lot...and in the end...

VICTORY WAS OBTAINED!!!!

ELITE FOUR CLEARED!!!

LANCE DEFEATED!!!

NEW CHAMPION!!!
---
---

Yes, after all this time, after painstakingly raising and evolving and grinding my team, we have finally cleared the Elite Four. Things got a bit hairy at first with Will, I forgot how damaging psychic is as a move and the fact that it can lower special defense. Luckily we managed to get past him.

Then came Koga, whom like Whitney is a cheating bastard who doesn't like to fight fair but instead sends out his goddamn sludge eating, constant minimizing, toxic spewing, gunk shooting Muk out. The only thing I can say is thank goodness Champion (oh such a perfect name now) the Typhlosion knew Swift, a move that doesn't miss...unfortunately its a very weak move. It was a huge battle of attrition there but once the Muk went down, the rest follow suit.

Then came Bruno, this was the time for Delta the Scyther to take command. Not only was wing attack super effective against the fighting types, the addition of "Technician" increased its power even more so I believe. Unfortunately Delta couldn't be around the likes of Machamp too much, whose combination of rock slide and just overall greater power left a lot to be desired. But that's what Verakoi the Gyarados and her Intimidate are there for.

With the Machamp down, Bruno fell too. It was time face the 4th challenger, Karen. I knew I had to get Verakoi in and immediately began pumping some special attacks into her. The Houndoom was the biggest concern. Something like Surf should do the the job but I had to make sure. Luckily my luck was with me there, and the water dragon soon took care of the competition.

There was only one thing left to do. It was time to face the challenger. I can't deny I was kind of worried, some of Lance's Pokemone were around 5 level's higher and his Dragonites are no laughing matter. Frankly I knew there was no way I could win directly, the gap was just too much at this point. Plus I feared what would happen if his one Dragonite ever got "Thunder" off. It would definitely spell the end for Verakoi but she was the trump card in all of this.

It's probably a good thing Lance starts off with Gyarados in this case, none of its attacks were worth much against Verakoi. Therefore it allowed us to do a constant addition of "Dragon Dance" not only increasing attack but speed as well. We continued this until neither could be rose anymore and then started our assault. Of course the Gyarados went down easily and then then Areodactyal.

This would be it, I knew this winged monster knew Rock Slide and that could potentially spell the end for Verakoi. With a mighty Ice Fang and power increased by the Dragon Dance, we unleashed an icy maw of violence.

And defeat! Our foe fell!

The first Dragonite...ICE FANG...Defeated!

The second Dragonite...ICE FANG...Defeated!

The Third Dragonite...ICE FANG...Defeated!

Charizard...took a few bites but....Defeated!

And that's how we became champion of Johto!
