I definitely hope things go better for you Mitas.

I tried out another Platinum Nuzlocke and, skipping all the stuff I've done until now, I just managed to beat Fantina and get the third badge. I had hoped Thundercat the Luxio would've been helpful against the Ghost Gym but apparently he decided to get killed by a combination "Curse+Night Shade" earlier on in the game. Not going to lie, thought it was going to end here since Fantina has always given me trouble in the past. I had caught a Gastly earlier which I thought even though its weak to ghost, it's also strong against it. Train it enough and maybe get a Gastly would help. But it didn't last long.

Luckily there was a light at the end of the tunnel named "Rena, the Staravia" who pulled her weight through the entire match. It took a few Super Potions but in the end, she won us the victory. I'm quite proud of her. This is the first time I've ever made it this far in a Platinum Nuzlocke so...wish me luck.

Platinum Nuzlocke Update:

Just beat the fourth gym and got my next badge and...oh boy it was doozy. I thought Rena would've easily handled the fighting gym and in fairness she did, but once I got to Maylene, things started taking a huge turn south. Her Metidite went down easily but trouble came when her Machoke arrived. While Rena did some serious damage to it, I did not expect it to use Rock Throw. It was very lucky that it didn't crit. Just when I thought my troubles were over, Lucario came out.

Force Palm, instant paralysis and doing around half damage. I switched to Kiromaru in the hopes of negating some of that damage. It worked a bit but even then the damage done was excessive and even Kiro became paralyzed. I sent out a Kadabra, hoping a confusion would at least take it down. Unfortunately Kadabra was just too slow, it fell in defeat. My only plan was to hopefully send in Rena and Intimidate Lucario. I did it constantly, switching back and forth between Pokemon. We lost a little Cleffa who I had planned to turn into a Clefairy.

Luckily though we managed to bring Lucario's attack stat down enough to actually get some work done. Kiromaru took to the helm and perhaps because it ran out of Force Palm PP, it began to use Bone Toss (Or whatever it was called) a much more easily endured move. We thought the next best strategy was to lower its defense and began tossing a few Rock Smashes.

While our goal of lowering defense did not arrive, we were lucky enough to do enough damage to it and prevented it from taking a potion, had it done so, it may have spelled the end. After one heck of a grueling battle, victory was obtained.

4 badges down, I'm not sure how to feel about going to Pastoria now.

Platinum Update:

Well it's over. I actually managed to beat the water gym though I lost Rena the Staraptor in the process. A big shame because thanks to her, she one hit killed both Wake's Gyarados and his Floatzel and nearly took out his Quasire before Rock Tomb did her in and even then the only reason that took he rout was because she had to rest after using Hyper Beam. She definitely put in her work through the gym.

I do admit at one point before the gym Kiromaru, the Empoleon (Prinplup back then) had been KOed by a Goldeen. A Goldeen that knew Horn Drill, a OHKO attack. I beat the random NPC, put a revive on and brought Kiro back. I don't mind losing due to a critical but I wasn't about to lose my starter just because some random NPC got lucky with an attack that always KO's.

At one point I caught a Houndor, quickly evolved it into a Houndoom and was planning on raising him up quite a bit...until a random Wild Machoke took it out with a revenge. I still had Blitzkrieg the Ponyta so I still had my fire type, something I wanted to use for the Steel Gym. When I got to Celestic Town I thought Cyrus was going to murder me, but frankly I managed to get by him without much trouble.

Trouble came in Canclave when I had to face Barry who decided that having Heracross that knows Brick Break and can take out more than half of every single Pokemon's health in a single move even without crits and was faster than everyone. So needless to say, everyone died and I severely wish Barry will fall into a pit and break his neck.

Man, Platinum at its best is an extremely difficult game and at its worst, and a monotonous mess. Even if by some miracle I had gotten through all the gyms, I can guarantee by the time I reach victory road, my levels would've been in the 40s at best. If I managed to get actually get through Victory road, I'm going to have to face the Elite Four all of whom are around level 50+...then Cynthia who is just a monster with her levels reaching up to 62 with her Garchomp.

Frankly, I don't think I've would've wanted to go through all the tedious effort grinding everyone up to such a point. I won't lie, I think Platinum is kind of unfair and in many cases not very fun. At least when I try to do an Emerald Nuzlocke, I get a sense of challenge but fair play, where I don't have to painstakingly grind up through each and every gym and the difficulty spike happens every singe time.

Maybe I"ll see about a Soul Silver Nuzlocke.

Yeah, Platinum can be tough without Nuzlocke rules, let alone with those restrictions. I like that it's challenging in it's own right though, makes a change from easy Pokemon playthroughs. Tough to lose when you get to the 4th/5th badge onwards.

I did start a Leaf Green Nuzlocke, but the game crashed after I hadn't saved it for a few hours. I had only gotten to Cerulean City, but couldn't be bothered replaying it all. So I decided to go for a Pokemon X run:

Things have been going pretty smoothly, although the run is still in it's infancy. The trainer card lottery (last digit in the trainer card number) rewarded me with the starter I wanted in the first place, Froakie, and after laughing in the face of Shauna and her Fire starter we set out on our journey. The team began to take shape as we added Pansear, Bunnelby, & Psyduck before facing down the first gym leader. Romeo the Pansear, fittingly named considering he was the only male on my team, made quick work of the Bug gym and we were 1 badge to the good without any deaths.

We continued on to the next major city, Lumiose, picking up Lady the Ledyba on the way, but her place in the team was short lived after we were gifted a Bulbasaur (I used the second to last digit in my trainer card number) and caught a Skiddo. Things progressed uneventfully and the team are in good standing, however, a sleeping giant by the name of Snorlax looms on the horizon. Catching it could prove dangerous to the health of my team, battling it wouldn't seem to be any safer, but one thing's for sure: we will not run.

I'm currently playing through some Soul Silver, no Nuzlocke for now just a regular plalythrough and...by goodness is the difference notable. While there have been challenges along the way, Bugsy's Sycther is no joke and I dread facing Whitney right now, everything just feels fair. I feel like the game is giving me a fair challenge without throwing sudden curve balls.

Whitney may be the exception to that though.

Playing Soul Silver actually makes me think I'm having fun while at the same time being challenged, Platinum honestly felt like I was being forced to work without getting paid.

Anyways I'm still kind of building up my team, hoping to find a Nidoran to help out with Whitney and I'm hoping Gastly, soon to be Haunter hopefully can provide some support. I'm hoping a good placed "Curse" will help end the Milktank before it gets out of hand.

Sounds like a sound strategy. Nidorans are really useful in Whitney's gym. Double Kick sweeps through the early trainers, giving it a chance to level up quick and usually evolve before the gym battle, then it does a good job against Miltank, taking it down to low health, if it doesn't take it down entirely.

Short update:

The dreaded Snorlax proved to be dangerous in foresight alone. I started off with a Leech Seed from Skiddo, figuring that would give a constant source of damage through the inevitable Resting. Skiddo brought it down to yellow health and I started throwing Pokeballs. However, with Leech Seed slowly draining it's health, there was no Rest in sight. Snorlax finally keeled over before it could be caught (so yeah, no Rest, which is why I anticipated catching it to be hard, plus it's attacks didn't do as much damage as I thought they would, so I could have just gone the regular route of red health+Sleep Powder).

However, just a few moments later the first tragedy struck. As we set foot in a new area, a rare Axew jumped out to meet us. Eager to add her to the team, I set about lowering it's health. Suddenly, out of nowhere......Dragon Rage (on a goddamn level 13 Pokemon, how in the hell does that work?). Rosa the Bunnelby stood no chance, her HP eradicated and the first casualty accrued. The Axew was caught, but as I was wrestling with the morality of including a murderer in my team, we were hit with our second death: a wild battle critical hit that wiped out Axew. Karma, possibly, but a useful Pokemon dead.

My plan actually worked! By the time I got to Whitney Nidoran (male) had evolved into Nidorino, though he wasn't really ready to take on the likes of her Milktank. The first thing that needed to be done was to to take care of her Clefairy, thankfully Croconaw handled that little thing with zero issues. Then came the Miltank, banking all my hopes on my plan, I sent out the Gastly to do the deed.

I thought being a normal type, even if Gastly couldn't necessarily hurt the Miltank, it couldn't do the same. I had forgotten about "Scrappy" and a Stomp nearly took it out. However Gastly survived just long enough to lay down the Curse before fainting. Had this been a nuzloke, his sacrifice would've been remembered forever. My next step was to send in Nidorino. I didn't bother using Double Kick, frankly Milktank's defenses are just too good and it was 4 levels higher. Instead I opted to bring down its defenses with two well placed Leers before the Nidorino also fell.

It was now up to Croconaw to finish what the others had started. With a combination of Croc's already decent defense, accompanied by the Dark Move "Bite", the dropped defenses of Leers and the ongoing Curse, what has probably been one of the biggest banes of Johto went down.

Glad to hear you're having more fun with this playthrough EMIYA.

Update:

When last we heard from our hero, he had just taken the first two casualties of his Nuzlocke adventure. Indeed, it appeared that the 6th spot of the team had developed a curse as the next two Pokemon to tryout for the roster, Ruby the Mienfoo & Ruckus the Sandile, both promptly met with a grizzly end. While exploring the Glittering Cave, I stumbled across an Old Amber and upon reviving the fossil at the Ambrette Town laboratory, the latest, and current, sixth member of the team joined our quest: Ace the Aerodactyl.

Up next was the Cyllage City gym. The leader of this particular gym, despite being a Rock-type specialist, was known to employ Amaura, a Pokemon with Ice type moves in it's arsenal. This, coupled with the inevitable Rock moves, ruled out all but Mimi/Frogadier and Selena/Psyduck. Mimi, however, was an absolute champion. With the aid of an X Defend & an X Special Attack, she dealt handily with Amaura before, with the aid of a missed Rock Tomb, wiping out Tyrunt in two moves without taking a scratch. Two badges down and the Nuzlocke continues.

Going great there Mitas.

We arrived shortly in Eukatreak (sp) and with a few things to do before we got to the Gym, we first dealt with a foolish Rocket Grunt messing around with the pretty Kimono girls. Next step was the Burned Tower where not only did three legendary dogs escape, but we also ran into our despicable rival "Silver." Of course he was easily dealt with. It was now time for the gym, building up the now newly acquired Haunter, facing Morty proved to be the most difficult matches yet.

Haunter with his patent "Shadow Punch" ripped through the Ghastly and first Haunter that arrived. Trouble came when the Gengar arrived with Shadowball. Being both faster, and using a relatively strong attack that was Super Effective, my Haunter's faint was obvious. But I did not realize just how powerful Shadow Ball was. Not only did it decimate Haunter but it seem to rip through the rest of the team.

We tried a second match, as my Haunter grew stronger I found out that this time it was faster than the Gengar but in the end, I wasn't good enough to stop a second defeat. Thank goodness this wasn't a Nuzlocke. It was time to return to the plan that had helped save us from God Killing Cow, sending out Haunter one more time, we issued the Curse and set it upon the form that my Haunter could never reach (unless I decide to cheat).

Haunter feel of course but with the Curse at hand, Gengar fell. Things didn't go to easily, even Cursed, Gengar is a powerful opponent. We sent in a stream of sacrificial lions to help whittle down it's health before finishing it off with Croconaw.

I thought things would be easy then, Croc could surely handle his weaker Haunter but Croc had taken a lot of damage. A good Night Shade would've done a bit of damage. Luckily I reached into my bag to pull out some potions...and realized the only thing I had left was 3 simple Oran berries. I had no choice, stuffing the berries in the croc's mouth, I was lucky that the Haunter decided to use moves like Mean Look before getting into the direct attacks.

Things got scary but in the end, we finally obtained victory. The Fourth Badge is down.

We head west now.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

A fair bit of progress has been made since my last update, so I'll skim through everything:

Many friends have been lost. Skip the Skiddo fell to a power crazy Lucario (1x Power Up Punch and a Swords Dance for 3x Attack boost, I was lucky to get out of that battle with just one death). That battle was against Gym Leader Korrina and we didn't even get a gym badge for our troubles (that never made sense to me, you battle her and win before you have to battle her again for the badge). A short while later we lost Serena the Psyduck to a wild encounter, and then the biggest loss of all: our starter. I wish I could say it was in a meaningful trainer battle, but alas, it was to a wild Miltank who had entered into a Rollot chain. Pride got the best of me and I thought I could escape unscathed by using Smokescreen. It didn't miss and Mimi fell (that really sucked, I can't remember why I didn't run). The last and most recent death was Timothy the Slowpoke, a new member to the team.

Tragedy aside, the Nuzlocke did seem to be in quite good standing. The Flying- and Grass-type gyms were easy enough with my abundance of Flying and Fire Pokemon. Then came the Electric gym. New addition Lunatone handled Emolga and Simisear swept aside Magneton. With the Attack boost of a few Power Up Punches, I decided to let Romeo the Simisear take on Heliolisk, who is part-Normal. Mistake. A Thunderbolt took him out in one move (I honestly did not expect that, figured I could tank one hit and switch out if need be). Venusaur came in to pick up the pieces, but now I had lost my two oldest friends.

To make matters worse, there was a follow up battle against Serena. Things were going fine until her Chesnaught tanked an Aerial Ace from Aerodactyl (tanked a 4x weakness, sure, that's fair) and then proceeded to down him in one shot with a Seed Bomb that wasn't even super effective. One more loss. I caught a Carnivine called Olivia to add to my now depleted team, but bad catching luck (the amount of wild Pokemon I've accidentally killed is stupidly high) meant that I either had to roll with 5 Pokemon until the next new route, or include a *gulp* Ledyba or Luvdisc in my team.

Posted Image Olivia, Lv. 32 Posted ImageDelta, Lv. 33

So yeah, bit of a mixed bag. I'm making progress, but I've had a few tough losses. The last two were especially frustrating since they were both a high level and they came so quickly after one another that it's left a hole in my team. But, all that aside, I'm still pretty confident. Hopefully the next route gives me a decent Pokemon.

I got quite far in my regular Soul Silver run so I decided to try y hand at a Nuzlocke. Things were going quite fine until I ran into the raging cheating girl known as Whitney and her raging cheating cow Milktank. Seriously, despite personally grinding up everyone so that they were on her level, if not stronger, she still ended up taking out nearly everyone. Flaffy, Zubat, Drowzee, you name it. Tried to get a few poison gases off, knew it had the berry but I thought afterwards I could get it but no, it's accuracy sucks.

Thought I could get Disable to take off its broken stomp. Of course it starts using Rollout it's other just as broken move and when I try to confuse it, it basically pops back out of it on the 2nd turn. Had I luckily not got it burned by Quilava, there's no doubt I would've lost. About half way through, it used "Attract" and Quilava just point blank would not attack. I just had to hope I could get its health down via the burn and have enough Potions in stock. I did thankfully but....wow...

Seriously Whitney is cheap I'm sorry. Everyone else might be challenging but at least they're fair.

So I was down to my Starter again, I decided to fish by a nearby stream and caught me a Magikarp. Took that little guy to the Day Care and for the next hour or so I just went up and grinded him like all heck until I finally got myself a Gyarados. At this point I need something nice, plus having a water+Flying will help me deal with both Silver's "Croconaw/Feraligatr" and any ground type Pokemon. Plus it'll help me deal with those rock types as well. Was really hoping I could have had a Hypno and Ampharos but the Hell Cow of Johto thought otherwise.

Needless to say it sucks but hey, I'm still doing better here than the first time I did a Platinum Nuzlocke.

Yeah, Miltank is a bastard if you don't have the right Pokemon, which is down to pure luck when you're doing a Nuzlocke. I've been pretty lucky in every Soul Silver Nuzlocke I've done in that I've had Geodude and/or Nidoran every time I've faced Whitney.

Yeah, it really kind of bites and what would you know, afterwards I caught a Nidoran and quickly evolved her. Along the way I ran into a Vulpix, in need of a Fire Type, the thought of getting a Ninetails later on sounded great until it decided to use Roar. It seemed my luck wasn't going too well...that is until i went into the Bug Catching Contest. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would actually run into my all time favorite Pokemon!

Scyther! I made darn sure we caught this guy. I was thrilled to get him and couldn't help but call him "Pride."

Afterwards, we took care of the Sudowoodo blocking the path and made our way to Eukatreak.

That's great. Scyther's definitely on my all-time favourite list too. Watch out for Morty's Gengar, I personally think it's harder than Miltank. That's where most of my Soul Silver Nuzlockes have either ended or been decimated. Gyarados should be really helpful though, with Bite.

That's kind of my game plan right now. Frankly with Bite being Super Effective against Ghost and Gyarados' overall stats being...quite frankly phenomenal I don't see much of a problem. Even it's special defense, which Shadow Ball (the move Gengar uses) is incredibly high. Quite frankly if Gyarados can't handle this I don't know who can.
---
---

Update:

Just faced Morty and yeah, things got a bit hairy with his Gengar. I think I underestimated that thing's Special Attack stat because Shadow Ball was a doozy. But luckily Revolution, the Gyarados stood strong and took him out and once the Gengar was out of the way, the Gastly and Haunters were easy picking. I think I'm going to head east to Mahogany and deal with the Red Gyarados though I won't go to the Gym yet.

I want to get the Exp Share from Mr. Pokemon and I need the Red Scale for that.
---
---

Final Update.

So close but the Nuzlocke has come to an end. Clair's Kindra decided to do business. All the way to the 8th and final gym. What's worst is the fact that the team was doing great, no deaths. "Revolution" took to the head with Caedeus and Pride helping out greatly. Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce, while offering some resistance fell to the combine might of the glorious team. But once we got to Clair things took a huge nose dive south.

And what's worst is that, once I started the fight, I popped in a good 3 X-Attacks to "Revolution" and even had an Ice Move (Ice Fang) ready which at least should've been hitting for Neutral damage on Kingdra (Being Water/Dragon). Of course her other Pokemon went down without a hitch but a stray critical took out the Gyarados. At that point it was just a matter of surviving. Threw Pride out next who managed to survive quite a few hits and luckily (though not luckily enough) I brought a lot of Hyper Potions.

I think by the time Pride went down she had used up all of her "Hydro Pumps" which I had hoped would at least give Caedeus the Typhlosion a fighting chance. I just kept pushing out more Pokemon, trying to keep them alive and wittle down her PP. By the time I got down to Typloshion, the last Pokemon I managed to hold out long enough to make her use up all the Dragon Pulses and Hydro Pumps. The only thing left was Hyper Beam and Smokescreen and I had "Swift" so that last one wasn't a problem.

Thought I could've made it, at one point we even landed a "Burn" and twice we nearly brought the Kingdra's health down to read. But of course she has not only a Hyper Potion" but a "full Restore" as well. Assuming crits didn't happen, if I had like...2-3 more Hyper Potions, I might have pulled off the win by just pushing Kingdra down until it could only use Smokescreen.

But alas, despite putting up a heck of a fight, we fell.

Welp, the Nuzlocke is over. Literally out of nowhere. I was doing pretty well, had a solid team together, then a random trainer battle against a Mienshao proved my downfall. Partly my own fault since I thought to myself "I should go back and heal", but couldn't be bothered. Ah well. Got pretty far though, right on the cusp of the 7th badge.
