We have openly gay rugby players, referees, female footballers and one or two boxers. So would it be a big deal if a male footballer came out too? I'm not saying that they should be outed. It's none of my business who they seek relationships with. What I'm asking about is whether anyone else would care and why would they since so many other athletes are open about their sexuality? |

There have been openly gay footballers. Robbie Rogers played for the Los Angeles Galaxy after coming out as gay. And a Swedish footballer, Anton Hysen. No high profile footballers though, or in high profile leagues, which I guess is what you mean. It'd be a big deal though. People would definitely care. I don't know how high a number, but there's a lot of homophobia amongst footballing fans, so I'd imagine that an openly gay footballer would hear it during games (more likely in some countries than others, England being one of them). Football fans seem to be a lot more creative with their chanting, at least in my experience of watching various sports, and that creativity ends up being offensive a fair chunk of the time, so there'd 100% be chants aimed at openly gay players. It'd also get a lot of media coverage, so it'd be a big deal in that way. |

There's a whole article about it on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_English_football The most famous gay footballer I can think of was Justin Fashnu who came out as gay but was accused of sexual assault by a 17 year old boy and committed suicide shortly afterwards. The most recent gay footballer to come out that I can think of was Thomas Hitzlsperger. |

I do remember a thing in the sun newspaper (i think) a couple of years ago where they were outing an Aresenal FC player without actually using a name, but then there was this big deal from the fans about not wanting to watch a gay player and the straight males on the team were pulling that "he's gay he must be watching me shower" shit. So I think it would blow up, yeah. |
