Here's a video by Hail Zeon that explains why the animation in Dragon Ball Super is often criticized:

He could have used way better footage for the off-model sequence. Those shots contained a few off-model characters, but they were really minor imo. Also DBZ had a TON of off-model shots too. Obviously DBZ is older so it's slightly more excusable, but given that the point of his video is to basically show how DBZ's art/animation is better than Super's, it's not a good idea to use the one thing that DBZ was absolutely awful at.

The rest of the video is solid. The Trunks scene in particular was done amazingly bad in Super compared to Z. That half-assed looking scream Trunks gave does not convey pain at all. Just look at it muted and you can barely even tell he's sad. But I'll give it one thing, it got rid of that stupid squeezing his hand so hard he bleeds thing. That makes no sense.

Yeah I wouldn't even hire toei. I would ask another animator to try to replicate DBZ cause toei makes worse work than they did 20 years ago

As much as I love Toei, and as much as I know how hard an animation process is, (I don't know if it's just me but), doesn't it look weird?

Which I don't remember having this eye movement animation seen in the old DBZ animation.

It really hurts how good the animation is on the opening. I don't mind the kiddy artstyle but at least put more effort in the animation, because if the writing isn't good, then where does all the effort go? I still find it hard to believe that the revival of what is possibly one of the biggest and most influential franchises of the last 30 years is THIS bad, and that it doesn't have any effort put into it.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

I think it's just a fan edit. Still doesn't make it any less hilarious.

And to Super, it's a shame this is(subjectively) the best Super has ever been in terms of animation

The fluidity in that kick and the back and forth between the two was amazing, too bad it's so damn short. :/

Dragon Ball Z has its fair share of terrible animation, but I don't think I've seen anything from Super that was on model.

I certainly haven't seen anything that compares to some of the best scenes from the Goku vs Cell fight, SSJ2 Gohan vs Cell, SSJ3 Goku vs Fat Boo, or SSJ2 Goku vs Pure Boo, to name a few.

Those moments made up for the average to below average animation elsewhere.

Edit:- in light of the post above this, I've now seen something from Super that wasn't bad.
