Screw you guys for not wanting Gohan to be a mindless brute, brains have no place in DBZ! I don't care that this completely and utterly destroys the possibility for any sort of flexible fighting to make it more interesting! No! I want them to continue doing the equivalent of me grabbing two dolls and bashing them at one another! You're all stupid and anti-dbz for wanting anything else! |

Well, there is one line in the manga where Goku asks where Gohan is on the way to the tournament, and after Videl tells him he's at a conference, he says, "geez, that guy!" He's clearly disappointed in his son. |

That's kinda true. Though I don't think it's as bad as some people are saying. It's also completely different in the anime. When Goku finds out Gohan will be at a conference that day he just says "Don't sweat it. Your studies are important too", which is the exact opposite of what everyone else is making him out to be. |

No need to be so insulting to everyone. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, you don't need to go calling everyone stupid and saying screw you. |

It's because back in the final stages of DB and start of Z, the Dragon Ball Franchise was shifting towards a bit more of a less light hearted series. So, Goku's character was modified accordingly. But then, the Dragon Ball Franchise later during the Buu Saga decided to shift back to a more light hearted series. And, Super is essentially suppose to be a mix up of Z and DB. That is, Super is supposed to have fast paced action oriented fights like Z. In addition to that it's also supposed to be a bit more light hearted than Z and be more like the earlier parts of DB in terms of the atmosphere. So, Goku's character was again changed according to the requirements. Actually, the Goku you see in Super is essentially what Goku would have been in Z, if Z would have been a much light hearted series. That is, this is essentially how Toriyama visions Goku to be like, at least most of the time. |

Yeah, Goku being annoyed with Gohan is mostly from the manga. Anime wise, he still has his yet unsurpassed body count on his side, however, along with massive amounts of smugness involved with how casually he treats the genocidal madman that is Black. You didn't see him pulling that on Nappa, Vegeta, or the Ginyu Force. |

Sarcasm bro Anyway, Goku being disappointed over Gohan slacking off from his training is justifiable. While Gohan doesn't have to devote himself to training 24/7 like Goku and Vegeta do, he should still find the time to train so he can protect his family. Goku and Vegeta aren't all-reliable; the other characters should be prepared in case Goku and Vegeta fail to protect the Earth (and Goku and Vegeta have failed repeatedly,. Goku and Vegeta are dumbasses; the others shouldn't rely on them to fix things) There are two extremes I see when it comes to Gohan fans. Some want Gohan to be a fighting enthusiast like Goku and Vegeta. Some want Gohan to be a complete bookworm who doesn't train at all. Both of these extremes are wrong; Gohan should be a balance between a warrior and a scholar. Edited by Scotty_Rogers, Jul 10 2016, 07:32 AM.

If it's been said already I apologize but... He's an unlikable douchebag. He's an Anti-Hero taking the role of the Hero. He's supposed to be the guy you're rooting for, who you cheer and love and want to be like. But he's not, he's a deranged madman who just wants to fight and kill. How that effects the lives of others means nothing to him. I make the constant comparison but imagine if Alucard from Hellsing went up and shot everyone in Rio and everyone was like "Hell yeah! You're awesome Alucard, splatter dem brains!" But they don't, Integra and everyone are shocked at his actions and Integra is left wondering if she made the right choice in sending him out. He is an Anti-Hero. A character with a dark or villainous disposition who does heroic deeds. That is exactly what Goku is, he is someone with dark or villainous disposition who just happens to do heroic deeds. It's the same way that Vegeta is an Anti-Hero. And Vegeta such as his time during the Cell Arc, was not treated as some kind of saint. He was treated as a dangerous foe who just happened to stand on the lesser evil of what they faced. And then you have this complete change in Goku's character. Toriyama wants to talk about how Gokuk only likes fighting and that's what makes him pure and it makes me wonder if he really bothered to read his own manga when making Battle of Gods. Goku was a guy who was merciful and changed from his wild side after meeting Kami. This is the guy who went out of his way to keep people out of danger. He was furious when No. 20 started destroying the city. This is the guy who wanted to avenge his friend's death at the hands of Nappa. This is the guy who personally refused to be wished back to life because by his own merit, he causes too much problems for the Earth. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think even on Namek when facing against Freeza, he wants to fight Freeza not just because he's strong, but because he's an evil bastard and Goku's ready to fight for the sake of the Saiyans and the Nameks that died there. He listens to Vegeta's plea and basically holds on to Vegeta's pride to face off against Freeza. Against the cyborgs, even when he refuses Bulma's offer to find Gero early, he does make the point that the guy technically hasn't done anything yet. You might question that logic but he's not exactly wrong. Against Cell, Goku doesn't want to fight because its fun, he wants to fight because he needs to stop him. He knows Cell is an evil character and that they need to stop him otherwise the Earth is screwed. Fighting for fun comes second and he knows that. But that's not the same for Boo Arc Goku and surely Super Goku. Fighting for fun is all that matters and what happens to anyone else..well hey, we got Dragon Balls. |

You could even say that Goku's and Vegeta's desire for a good fight in both in both the Buu saga and in Super is what caused most of the problems later on. |

![]() I don't think I could've been more clear about the sarcasm without adding /s at the end. That said, while I'd like for Gohan to be a mix, let's atleast look at it from his perspective. He's strong enough that Cell is literally an ant, Freeza cannot even hope hurt him, if Super Boo were suddenly revived, he could handily kick his a***. That Boo is multitudes stronger than Fat and Kid Boo. He's stronger than a primordial threat that is fueled off of evil (Toriyama's own words). You know, I think, I think, we can give him a pass for thinking there wasn't going to be anything else. It's not his fault that he would be written to somehow lose so much power in the course of a couple years that he almost forgets how to turn SSJ. Said power loss doesn't make sense when you consider he previously didn't train for 7 years and had, in comparison, lost maybe a few percentage points in power at most. It's not his fault that Freeza would suddenly be revived and could jump from his normal levels up to Super Boo tier power in his first form in just four months. It's not his fault that suddenly a wild God of Destruction appears. And it's not his fault that we're suddenly going on extraversal adventures. You know what, they literally can't write him currently to be anymore pathetic than he already is, just rewrite him. I want to see some kind of Sun Tzu Gohan that lectures foes on the art of combat whilst kicking their a*** with the exact lessons he's giving. In fact, get some kind of host-body concept going around of some accumulation of combat intelligence to take over Gohan, bring his power up, and then school all of these would be heroes on how to actually be heroic and how to fight beyond throw yourself at them and wail your arms and legs. Goku's desire for a good fight was a problem as far back as the 23rd Budokai when he let Piccolo live to have a good rival. And then did the exact same thing for Vegeta. Luckily those two instances they both became his friend, but it could have been much worse.
Goku wasn't that bad in the movie version of BoG. He was more arrogant and big headed than anything. He still showed that he cared about the planet and his friends when he says "I will not let you destroy my world" and later when images of Goku's friends and family calling out his name is what gives him the power to stop Beerus' ball. The only morally questionable thing I think he did in the movie as a result of his blindness for loving fighting was punching a hole through Kaio's planet. And I don't even know if that was in Toriyama's script (seems kinda like an animators choice more than anything). |

I think that was more Goku getting frustrated that he couldn't land a hit on Beerus. |

He does in both the movie and show, but in the movie, he doesn't intentionally match blows with Beerus that cause ripples of destruction across the universe. Because y'know, why would you choose to dodge when your dick needs measuring. |
