The original plan was to get their sons, but once Goku saw Dende and Satan he decided to get them and Vegeta got no one. Why couldn't Vegeta get Trunks and Gohan?

What Browser do you use? Google Chrome	Because they were probably already dead by the time Goku grabbed Dende and Hercule, and if they weren't Vegeta would've died trying to save them. Honestly, it was a dick move on Goku's side to save Hercule and Dende rather than his family and closest friends, but it all worked out for the plot.

Well Goku knew the Deus Ex Dragon Balls would've been able to resurrect them if Dende was around.
