Google Chrome	When Gohan's fighting Cell, he's apparently worried about the safety of the Earth. But by the end of the fight, the only damage is a not so big ditch in the ground. What damage was Gohan expecting that would freak him out so badly as to hold back? Was there a rare plant in that ditch?

I guess he thought his power could have reacher to the core but that's probably one reason why Goku told him he couldn't hold back. Not only did they have to finish things there but Goku probably knew that it wouldn't be enough to destroy the Earth. That's my best answer anyways.

I forgot about that the planet was already shaking and there was already destruction.

It's probable that Cell going full force and Gohan going full force at the same time would cause a much more devastating reaction

Google Chrome	I was being coy with the rare plant comment, but it was just something I'd never thought of. It doesn't help that it's forgotten so soon too. When they are doing the wishes on the Dragon Balls, no one mentions whatever damage Gohan may have caused and they just move to 18 right away.
