I was just watching this BBC documentary about the British weapons research facility called Porton Downs and it made me realise that with all the chemical and biological weapons at our disposal, nuclear weapons are kind of rubbish in comparison. I mean you could kill over 100,000 people with just small vile of some of this s*** they have in the lab. It would leave the buildings standing and you wouldn't have all the radioactive fallout to contend with. Another thing is that you could hide it in the target location and unlike a nuclear missile, they could never track it and shoot it down. All I'd have to do is say I'm visiting the country and then just leave it in my hotel room. Blow it up remotely. So why do we still have a nuclear armament? It's like continuing to use bows and arrows after we've invented the tank. |

Because bio-weapons have a horrid tendency to backfire. Nuclear fallout doesn't randomly mutate into new forms that become plagues just after being introduced to a single host. Also, they can certainly poison the area for a long while, and they have a far higher chance of affecting friendly forces than radiation(look at Agent Orange as an example). Also, chemical and biological weapons are banned, that too. They tend to be exceedingly cruel and while nukes fall under that to some extent too, at least those in the immediate fireball are turned to ash pretty much instantly. |

Nuclear weapons exist as a deterrent. The fact is that we opened Pandora's Box by making them in the first place. Once the US did it, all the other big countries followed suit and now other smaller countries have access to them too. However, now everyone either has access to nukes or is allies with a country who does. So, if one of the nuclear States actually launched one, they know they are basically opening themselves up to a strike right back so they won't do it. The only way to get rid of them now is if everyone did it simultaneously (not happening). So it's not so much about how effective they are but how countries aren't in a position to get rid of them. As for chemical and biological weapons, countries don't like them. They are banned under both the Geneva Conventions and other treaties. They are horrible and cause cruel and unusual suffering in order to kill someone. The major States decided to destroy their stockpiles and outlaw it. The reason for this is the same for why the Geneva conventions exist in the first place: countries do have a genuine interest in harm minimisation during wars which is why there are rules of war. Sure, some of them don't get followed but you'd be surprised how closely most countries stick to them most of the time. You don't want your own soldiers or civilians to suffer so that kind of stuff is forbidden by all sides. There's a reason this was one of the few issues that the US and Russia were actually able to agree on in Syria. |

Kind of glad governments appear to have some semblance of conscience. I mean, like I said any of the more advanced states could discreetly dispatch enough VX to destroy a country before they had time to control the damage and they'd almost never know who did it. |

It's probably because nukes are a far larger display of power even if they technically have a lower kill count. A huge explosion and a mushroom cloud is very effective and we have many videos of the effects of them, people having been poisoned is less impactful to look at than the land being devastated. I hope that one day we create some kind of neutral unit that stores them in the event of an alien invasion or something, they definitely have some use but for fighting each other absolutely not, not when there are so many and not when stupid people are in charge of them. |

I think that chemical weapons would be far more useful against aliens. However they would use them against us first before we knew what was happening. They'd probably use way more damaging stuff than VX too. |

Depends, they might not be as advanced in warfare as we are but in any case nukes would work better against enemies in space(that's actually what I meant should have said) |

Pretty sure shooting a nuke at a flying saucer that's just hanging around in the upper atmosphere would be a VERY bad idea. I mean, it'd the extinction of the dinosaurs all over again. Lots of lethal gases going across the surface of the planet and contaminating and killing everything. Sick avatar btw. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

If they're able to traverse the galaxy and/or universe while we're still struggling to get a man to Mars, I think it's safe to assume they'd have some pretty advance tech capable of wiping us out with the push of a button. Let's just hope we don't meet a race that's like what I said. |

Not necessarily. If they've focused more on space-faring than weapons tech, it's perfectly possible for them to be on a similar level to us in that regard. |
