Surprisingly, there wasn't a thread for this game, but the new Doom certainly deserves one for being so badass.

I'm definitely enjoying it personally, allot of emphasis on running and gunning, the weapons are mostly interesting (sole exception of the pistol and boring attachments), the levels are pretty enjoyable and they have a decent bit of exploration of secrets to them. It's nowhere near the outright mazeshooter game that was Doom 1 but it does pay homage to it I feel. I hope games like Doom become more common. One thing I didn't see coming though? I like the Doom Marine, quite allot actually, he has a decent amount of character for what's essentially a mime with guns. There's that thing he does with the toy, the way he dies in lava, and his reaction to Hayden's own monologue during the first level. There's a clear and defined character underneath that silent armor, and quite honestly he seems really cool overall. Edited by Tinny, Jun 8 2016, 04:31 PM.

While I wasn't really a gamer when DOOM was a huge thing and I haven't really played it all that much I LOVE how they kept it as similar to the original as possible. They didn't make it some lame throwaway action game with a subpar story and standard gameplay they basically just made the original DOOM with modern tech. s***'s awesome. I think they found the right balance here, change things too much and it's not DOOM anymore but keep it exactly the same and it can't match other games today. The only real negative I'm seeing from DOOM fans is the Glory Kill mechanic but with how much health you lose in a single shot, especially on the harder modes I think it's fine really. In the older games health pickups were way more common and you could just learn where they are. Plus Glory Kills look f***ing cool. Need to get back and play this but always too tired for shooters started it on hard mode too.

I wouldn't say so, not exactly anyway, the original Doom was quite different, in that game exploration and secretes were as much a part of the game, arguably more so than the shooting. Here the exploration is mostly just optional, it's encouraged but the emphasis is clearly on the action rather than the maze running. I'd say DOOM '16 is a shooter with some of the elements of the original maze shooter idea while the original is a maze shooter through and through. They're both good games but by no means are they the same (sub)genre but with different tech. These are wholly different types of First Person Shooters. I think the Glory Kills are fine honestly, but mostly because they're short and don't take up much time allowing you to continue fighting at relatively the same pace rather than grinding things to a halt. The Doom Slayer, you mean? I dunno what you were expecting, besides him being cool, Doomguy is essentially the original Master Chief. |

They actually refer to him as both the Doom Marine and the Doom Slayer, I think it depends if you're a human or a daemon as the first time I encountered the term slayer was with the daemon lore, rather than the UAC lore which described him as the Doom Marine. I was not expecting as much personality as I got, I was kind of just assuming the main character would more or less be a completely silent protagonist that had no personality (so you could insert yourself in or something). Instead I think I have a fair grasp on who he is as a person and how he'd act outside of a fight or adventure when he'd presumably just be milling about, that's something I don't even get with Drake most of the time (Uncharted 1 and 2 anyways), and he talks allot while Doom Guy... Well he's completely silent. |

How not? There's hardly that much in the original game and it's all still optional.
They're as close as you can get between completely different generations though. I've actually played more of the game now. Damn hard to get used to when you haven't played much FPS for a while but I persevered and are now much in the swing of it. Hard to play it with a controller and no auto-aim but that just makes it more rewarding! The only thing that kind of annoys me is the hidden stuff, it's hard to tell if you're going to be allowed back in to an area to check if you missed anything so you have to observe everything just in case. Quite a break in the action sometimes. Of course you can just plough through and not bother but I'm on Nightmare mode(I think) so kind of need the upgrades. Looking forward to replaying it on easy for a collectibles run and destroying everything. The Heavy Assault Rifle is no f***ing joke. .50 Cal standard ammunition? Christ... |

Most of the game was running through a maze searching for secretes, weapons, health, and armor, it's also not nearly as linear as the new one is, and allot of the time you're dropped into outright maze segments searching for keys and such. Not really, one's a maze shooter and the other is an action FPS with maze elements. That's like saying Soul Calibur is the closest thing we have to Street Fighter 2 or that it's the same subgenre of fighting games. It's not, Soul Calibur is a 3D fighter and SF2 is a 2D fighter, they both have many of the same elements but they're not the same subgenre. Even if Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter never went back to 2D (and for some reason other 2d fighters stopped coming out) Soul Calibur still wouldn't be the same sub genre or the closest thing we can get between generations. I get that the maze shooter genre is more or less dead but that doesn't mean you can group that with games like Doom, it's closer to that than CoD or Bioshock, but that's not saying much. Well it is hidden Honestly I don't mind it, I like searching the area, also lets me find more of the lore which is surprisingly enjoyable to read and gives me a deeper insight into what's going on here. There's a rich world they really made here that's ironically completely optional to explore so far, there's a clearly realized world here, but they realize it's Doom and most aren't playing to see more of the UAC company and their corporate hierarchy.I think my favorite attachment so far is probably the rocket launcher one, the thing that lets you detonate a missile in the middle of the air because I have terrible aim with that, I'm pretty sure 80% of my hits with it were due to just blowing it up when it got slightly behind or to the side of whatever monstrosity I'm shooting at. Also makes the shield on those guards really easy to get around. Worst is the scope, I have no idea what I was thinking taking a scope instead of the rockets for the rifle, I later just ended up getting the rockets, they do well enough for long range anyway and they explode. |

It's still pretty much the same though that's like all you do in this new one it's just a bit more focused, the levels couldn't be too big I suppose. As much as I love the chainsaw kills they're kinda BS the big Hell Knight dudes kill me in like 2-3 hits outright but I can one hit kill them... No real reason not to just upgrade ammo and abuse that. I feel like with big enemies it should just take their limbs off and drastically weaken them. Though it does use more fuel but ammo is easy to come by. I've just got the rocket launcher and then the plasma rifle, missed the earlier one. Love that you get multiple opportunities to find weapons that's brilliant. I also took a silly upgrade to begin with, took the charged shot or whatever for the shotgun thinking "everyone takes the explosive shot, why not" It's pretty much useless. If it didn't use 3 shotgun shells somehow it'd be great but explosive all the way. Yeah quite liking all the lore in it it's a shame it couldn't be more expansive without ruining the concept of DOOM it's a really cool setting. Looks gorgeous too. Love the kind of briefing thing for the second or so mission that says something like: "Samuel Hayden has offered you help if you need it. You don't. You just need ammo and to destroy everything in your path" Love how Doom Guy is just the epitome of "f*** you" as a character. |
