Civilian firearm ownership

What will you do when you get old?

Do you support the right to own firearms as a civilian? No numbers or statistics, just your personal opinions. If yes, do you think it should be free and unfettered access or heavily policed and restricted?

Personally I think the only restriction civilians should have on owning firearms is that they must have at least one in their household.

Wait, are you saying that it should be required by law to own a gun?

Yes I do agree that we should have the right to own a gun. But I also agree that there needs to be strict rules on owning them since they are very dangerous weapons. We should try to keep the number of weapons owned by psychos, idiots and children down to a minimum. But since most gun owners are responsible, I don't see why they should lose out just because of a few dangerous idiots.

You can be damn sure I'm all for civilians owning guns. If not for protection, recreational activity is a great reason for having one. A bow and arrow is boring compared to a 12-gauge.

Obviously the best way to control this is with very strict guidelines and restrictions. It shouldn't be nearly impossible for you to go to a store and buy a gun, but it shouldn't be as easy as showing an ID and taking one from the shelf. Spouses buying guns for their partners that are prohibited from owning one is also something that needs to be cracked down on (it's a big issue here in my city, at least).

Civilians being barred from owning guns is one of the derpiest concepts I've ever heard.

Saying it should be required to own a gun is just asking for a spike in gun-related deaths and incidents. That would be giving guns to the elderly, the mentally handicapped, and the psychologically unstable.

I think that people should have the right to own a gun, but it should be regulated. I don't give a crap if someone wants to own a gun, just don't wave it in my face like a dumb proud redneck and we're good.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Pretty much what has been said but also I don't think anyone should be allowed to have anything other than a handgun in public.

You're not allowed automatics I believe but over there you can still walk around with semi-auto submachine guns and whatnot right? That's just nonsense, it's just asking idiots to run around thinking they're Rambo if there's ever a shootout or something they shouldn't be involved in.
Moreover it no doubt just makes people feel unsafe.
Considering there's a mass shooting basically every day over there not sure why anyone would be happy seeing a guy walking towards their café with an assault rifle, it's just unnecessary.

Do whatever recreationally but in public it should be handguns at best. Idiots being able to outgun law enforcement is crazy.

We have open carry here where I live, so you can walk around with a shotgun and a long sword strapped to your back and it technically would be legal. You'd likely get stopped by the police and questioned, but they couldn't take you in for it.

I'm okay with people being able to own guns, the vast majority of people are. It's just that I don't think there should be an unrestricted right to own a gun. They are weapons, they are designed to kill people. You want to try to limit certain types of people from having access to that. Yes, some criminals will get guns anyway but just because you can't stop everyone doesn't mean you should just open the floodgates. Universal background checks for all gun sales no matter the seller, restrictions for people who have been convicted of violent crimes and for people with mental health issues.

Better definition of mental health issues should be a thing too.

That's a whole other area but yeah I agree. I don't really know enough to suggest specifics myself but I'd be hesitant to give guns to people who would be at serious risk to either other people or (probably more likely) themselves.

I'd be cool with that if it actually worked, but humans suck.
