I'm just wandering if there is a chain of events that could actually lead to a nuclear war? Seems that most world leaders view nuclear weapons as a last resort, preferring sanctions and diplomacy in their place. I imagine it would probably take nothing less than an attempted invasion before they were even considered. Even then I wonder if that would be deemed sufficient enough reason to use them. I think they would try to defend their borders first and if that started to fail then nuclear weapons would be launched. I really don't believe it would be an automatic response to invasion. |

You mean aside from one country with nukes intentionally or accidentally dropping a nuke on another country with nukes? |

How do you ACCIDENTALLY drop a nuke on a country? |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

Well couldn't a nuke accidentally slip from the carrier? I have no idea how it works. |

Nuclear weapons are fired from silos at military facilities and submarines. They need to have nuclear war heads attached to them before they can be used. As well as a team of engineers who check every thing's fine before launching and a bunch of people who are responsible for targeting and firing. Accidentally firing a nuke would be like accidentally sending a rocket into space. In fact it's basically the same principle. Basically you can't just push a button and nuke North Korea. |

I don't see any scenarios other than aliens attempting to conquer/destroy us then. |

Probably some kind of mass communication error. It's not nearly as possible as it was in the past though, with multiple forms of communications being able to be used to confirm something with total ease. |

I'm pretty sure that even if somehow there was a massive communication break down and a nuke blew up a city, diplomats would quickly scramble to explain the error before the worst happened. In fact that would probably be happening before the weapon hit its target. |

Actually there was an incident where some radar or whatever malfunctioned and showed that there were loads of nukes launched and there were going to be nukes fired back but the guy who'd be launching them refused to do it and luckily it turned out it was just an error. An error that could have potentially wiped us all out. Or most of us. I'm not sure what would bring about full on nuclear war, I feel like if one country where to get nuked negotiation would happen instead. Like if we in the UK get nuked because we get rid of our only safeguard our allies aren't necessarily going to just fire nukes back, if it's a choice between negotiation and saying "f*** it, destroy the world" then the former would probably happen. Guess if terrorists took control of say Russia's silo's and launched some it could happen too otherwise it's not hugely likely to happen...hopefully. It'd have to be a pretty insane country to start the war, North Korea would probably have already done it... |

Nukes have been lost in transport actually and some have not been recovered. Anyway wasn't the radar malfunction rumor proven to be just that, a rumor? I wouldn't say every world leader views nuclear warfare as a last resort, but at least the ones with the nukes do. |

It would take a country invading and basically at the cusp of overthrowing us before we used a nuke. |

They just happen at the fraction of a sec. Blinm ur eyes & b4 u realize, things have changed. |

I've heard of the incident that Steve described as well. Nobody is going to purposely star a nuclear war. It's suicide. Accidents like that would set of a chain reaction. |
