It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Thought I'd make a topic to discuss transfer rumours/official moves over the off-season. Arsenal have apparently made a £20 million bid for Vardy. I'd be wary if I were an Arsenal fan. He's only really had one good season under his belt. Before this season, he'd scored 25 goals in 97 games, two of those seasons being in the Championship. Plus, even if he does keep up his current level of play, he turns 30 this season. Considering pace is a pretty big part of his game, he's only going to be in his prime for maybe 2 seasons before he starts to decline. I think there are better options out there. |

So far West Ham, Middlesbrough and Man Utd. have impressed me most with their transfers. Man Utd might be spending a lot of money but Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan, those are big names. |

To be fair, we didn't 'let' Pogba go. We offered him a contract but he turned it down and went to Juve instead. We got like 800k for him in the end I think. Super stoked to have signed him though. Crazy window, we got Mou at the start of the summer then in came Zlatan, Mikhitaryan and now Pogba with Bailly looking like a good signing too if not a huge name in the same scope. Optimistic about the season, hopefully we can get it all to click. |

Fair point. But there was still a failure to keep hold of a clearly talented young player (it's not like it took him a couple seasons to establish himself at Juventus, he slotted in and performed well almost immediately). You could argue that by not doing more to keep hold of him, they made the active decision to let him move on to another club. That being said, this does happen all the time in football, the enormous transfer fee just sort of highlights it even more. But yeah, it's been a big off-season for Man Utd. Some very good players have come in, it'll be interesting to see how Mourinho can get things to play out. Edit: Just seen that Man City have named John Stones in their squad for the Champions League qualifiers before officially signing him. I guess that's one way to make sure they can play him, but how are they able to name a player to their squad that isn't their own player? Edited by Mitas, Aug 9 2016, 09:53 AM.

It's pretty ridiculous that we, a Europa League team, can sign players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba. |

It's not that ridiculous. Manchester United are still one of the biggest names/clubs in world football. They still carry a lot of weight. Plus, the players signing probably sign expecting to be in the Champions League next season. They also have a much healthier financial situation than regular Europa League clubs. |

People have been going on about how players won't sign for Man Utd if they fall outside top 4 and regularily misses out on the premiership title. That has turned out to be so wrong. |

But it's too soon to say they're regularly falling out of the Champions League. It's only been 3 seasons since Ferguson left and, discounting the first season because it was always going to be a tough one, they've qualified 50% of the time and just barely missed out last season. And it'll take at least a few more seasons of not winning the title for the shine of their countless titles under Ferguson to wear off. |

Money talks in Mikhitaryan's case, Ibra loves Mourinho + he has never played in England, so that worked out perfectly for him. As for Pogba, I can only assume that money talks in his case too because nothing about moving from Juventus, Serie A winners 4 years running and perennial CL contender, to United, in Europa League and generally playing poor football the last 3 years, makes sense. |

That's a pretty good reason to come back to Manchester United. Good to see he genuinely loves the club and isn't just looking for money that Juventus couldn't offer (not that there's anything wrong with that). |

Besides, just because the club has had a few bad years doesn't mean Man Utd isn't still a big club. In fact it's still one of the biggest clubs in the world when we look at all the sales and popularity numbers. |
