It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Thought I'd make a topic to discuss transfer rumours/official moves over the off-season. Arsenal have apparently made a £20 million bid for Vardy. I'd be wary if I were an Arsenal fan. He's only really had one good season under his belt. Before this season, he'd scored 25 goals in 97 games, two of those seasons being in the Championship. Plus, even if he does keep up his current level of play, he turns 30 this season. Considering pace is a pretty big part of his game, he's only going to be in his prime for maybe 2 seasons before he starts to decline. I think there are better options out there. |

I would have thought Martial would have been the first choice winger, otherwise he'll be on the bench, which isn't good. Obviously can't play regularly up front with Ibrahimovic taking the spot (assuming it's one up front), but he really needs playing time considering his youth, ability and price tag. |

Yeah I suppose so. I keep thinking he's a striker. Perhaps we don't need the winger then! My main issue with top-level football these days is that people keep shoe-horning players who play one position into playing multiple positions. I'm of the opinion that your squad should be made up of players that play in the positions you need them to and maybe have one or two utility players as an emergency. In the Utd team at the moment we've got Blind playing CB when he isn't one, we've started testing Rooney out as a CM, which I think is the right decision for him and we've also been using Valencia as a RB, which I'm not 100% convinced by. Then we've also got a few players who get asked to perform roles that they clearly aren't good at. If I was Mourinho I'd consign each player to a single position they play best in, list them out, get rid of the worst player in each position and replace them with players that we don't have enough of. |

We'll see what happens. Regardless I hope Rashford gets more chances this season to prove himself. |

Leicester City look like they've been busy too. Signed Nempalys Mendy from Nice who Ranieri used to manage at Monaco and have also done a deal for Ahmed Musa who played at the World Cup two years ago for Nigeria. I remember that Man Utd were linked with Mendy when he left Monaco so it will be interesting to see how he fits in to Leicester's team. Leicester also picked up Ron-Robert Zieler, formerly of Man Utd! They've got quite a few of our academy players... |

Palace have reportedly upped their bid to £31.5 million, so Liverpool were right to hold out. To be able to recoup pretty much the full transfer fee (inflation aside) is great, especially considering how obvious it was that we were looking to sell. That being said, he actually played well when he did play. His goals per minute statistics were pretty much equal to Lukaku, so I can see him being a success at Palace barring injuries. |

Benteke doesn't fit into Klopp's style, but he's still a very good player when utilized correctly. If Palace is willing to pay a huge sum of money for him and then use him correctly, then it's well worth the money. Good deal for both sides. |

Sounds like a statement of intent from Palace. That's a huge amount for them to be spending. If I was a Liverpool fan I'd be a bit concerned at selling Benteke though. He's only been at the club for a year and potentially will already be moved on because he doesn't fit the club's style or the manager's style. I'd be worried about what the club's transfer policy is if they're willing to spend huge sums of money on players that don't fit in and don't intend to keep. They've done this exact same thing before with Andy Carroll. Similarly, it seems to be that Liverpool just try to raid Southampton for players all the time and whilst Southampton are a good side, they aren't exactly a title contending team right now. For a club with the history that Liverpool has, this would also be a concern. |

To be fair, in the cases of both Benteke and Carroll they were signed under different managers. At the time I'm sure they intended to keep them around, but when the new manager came around they just weren't required anymore. Although, it does bring into question why would they spend that amount of money and then give their manager the boot so soon after. And yeah, we do seem to be signing too many Southampton players. Although lately they've been better than us, or finished a couple points behind us. Edited by Mitas, Jul 5 2016, 07:39 PM.

N'Golo Kante has just been signed by Chelsea: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36806454 If I were him I would've stayed at Leicester to see how long the fairy tale would last before considering moving elsewhere. If individual players are genuinely that good they'll get their big move even if the team they play for isn't that great so it seems a little unnecessary for him to move right now when Leicester are the champions and have champions league football when Chelsea don't. It may turn out to be the right move for him in the end but you've still got to think he could well have gone on to achieve more things with Leicester if things kept going their way. |

I agree. I would have thought every Leicester player would have wanted to stay around to continue the story. Like you said, worst case scenario they're knocked out in the group stages and they can move in either January or next summer. I guess they might be worried a poor showing in Europe and the league could lead to their reputations falling enough that the bigger clubs will lose interest. Also, money. |

I think this transfer window was always going to be a case of "Who has the twitchiest trigger finger?" with the Leicester squad. There will be a lot of clubs who saw what they did last year and think that they could use some of their better players in their own teams, some of them being big clubs with a lot of money, and time will tell which players want to see where Leicester takes them and which just want to move for the money and relative security of playing for a traditional big club. We've already seen Vardy reject Arsenal but Kante has ditched them for Chelsea. Mahrez will definitely be one to keep an eye on. |

Whether he stays or goes will really play a pivotal role in their season, although that's stating the obvious I guess. Kante is a big blow, but they've signed a player who will step into his role (whether he'll be good enough or not, time will tell). Losing Mahrez on top of that will probably see them struggle to challenge for European places, which would be a shame because it's a much better story if winning the league acts as a launching pad to put them in that Tottenham club of teams who are just outside the big clubs, but consistently there or thereabouts. |

Paul Pogba is in Manchester for his medical ahead of his transfer to Manchester United. Proposed price: £89m Complete and utter insanity, but that's what football is today. Edited by Emmeth, Aug 8 2016, 12:25 PM.

That's a lot of money, but it's less than the £100 million+ that was being bandied about. Factoring in the inflation it puts him at less than both Bale & Ronaldo, which makes sense. But yeah, crazy money. The insane part is that it's a player United already had and let go for free. |
