"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

If you actually saw the video, the Gorilla was pulling the kid around by the ankle through the moat. Even if he intended no harm to the kid, he still could've drown or killed him.
Tranquilizers don't always work, and more often then not, when they do, they can take up to ten minutes to put the animal asleep, and often require more than one. It's not like the movies where you shoot the gorilla and it drops into a deep sleep immediately.

I love Gorillas, and I hate bad parents, but given the situation, I don't necessarily think that the wrong decision was made. It's unfortunate it had to come to that, but despite the shortcomings of the mother and her inability to keep tabs on her four year old (which she SHOULD'VE been doing because witnesses are even saying that he told her he was going in), the kid's safety and life comes first.

With the other known instances of children falling into Gorilla enclosures, the Gorillas weren't acting violent toward them. Not like this instance.
The first instance of it happening was in the 90s, where a female gorilla (who actually had her own cub grabbing onto her) actually intentionally took the boy who fell in, to an area where the zookeepers could grab him. The other incident, another boy fell in, and the Silverback just sat there watching over the kid as he regained consciousness from his fall. They were then able to pull him out.

However, the mother should be investigated by CPS because there's plenty of witnesses who are saying that the kid told her that he was going into the gorilla enclosure, and that she did nothing about it.
