Thala na Gethu!

Effectiveness of protagonists depends largely upon the level of badassery their respective antagonists bring to the fore. Brains or brawn

So far, I've watched a handful of anime & felt the baddies need a shout out

Not in order:

1. Naraku (Inuyasha)

This guy pulls a Yagami Light (another badass villain) very often with solid backstory, intricate plans & traps to crush heroes in every possible way. A very anti-shounen baddy who doesnt shout, powers-up or flashbacks right in the middle of a fight. He forms a dozen of incarnations, hires tons of demons/ogres/bandits to serve him. To top it off, recontructs his body at various points using insane number of demons for different objectives (removing/obtaining his memories or discarding his human heart etc)

2. Father (FMAB)

The word "epic" can be used to describe the badassery Father brought to whole goddamn Alchemist World.

3. Oorochimaru (Naruto)

His backstory, plans & actions of attacking Konoha Village, Hokage Sama & enticing Sasuke to the dark side during his short appearance gave him an edgyness never seen before among ANY Naruto baddies. His horrible defeat aside, I still consider Oorochimaru as darn perfect villain with balanced amount of brains & brawn

4. Kid Boo (DBZ)

Greatest killing machine in history. You give a 3 year old kid a knife & watch him running around. Thats the impression Kid Boo gives. But frankly, as final canonical villain he wrecked havoc & caused utter chaos like no previous villains did. Blasted Earth, killed key Z-fighters, rampaged Kaioshin Realms & outlasted some of universe's greatest fighters One on One. Say whatever want. Kid Boo embodied pure badassery as far as brawn is concerned

5. Yagami Light (DN)

His mind-games & traps can be bombastic & even by standard of anime, intriguing. His transformations scenes from Light to Kira at various points are so darn amazing.

6. Chrollo Lucifer (HXH)

Most charismatic & anti-shounen baddy (just like Naraku & Light). His backstory isnt clear, but instead of being "born" as baddy, Chrollo chooses to be a baddie. Choosing ur life path that ur about to go down, that too as leader of Phantom Troope AND with principles makes Chrollo a distinct baddy.

I may have missed a few. Thoughts?

Crazy Awesome Legend

I really liked Freeza before he turned jobber. The true extent of his power was so extreme compared to where everyone else in the show was when he was first introduced. He could have literally one shotted everyone up to the point Goku went SSJ. His demolition of Nail and Vegeta was brutal. Plus of course he could effortlessly blow up entire planets.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Not entirely sure I consider him a villain really but Meruem from HxH is fantastic, dude's a true King.
Commands fierce unfaltering loyalty and is a superior being doing what he was born to.

He wasn't just some posh rich t*** on a throne he was dangerous and felt like it in almost every scene.
Fail to use manners when speaking to your King? Not good enough, off with your head.

It was great how he stayed true to his design and was defeated in a sensible way, there was no bulls*** friendship powerup nonsense that saved the day nobody could ever actually match him in a fight, merely entertain him.

Still, not sure I really consider him a villain. Sure as f*** he was bad news for the humans but so were we to every other species, he and the Chimera Ants in general were just the next stage in evolution they weren't really being evil they were just better.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

As I came across the term "true King" it instantly reminded me King Bradley's infamous quote to Ling Yao "Naive fool, there are no true Kings anywhere in this world"

Ironically, I consider King Bradley to be true King. The authoritative voice by Hidekatsu Shibatw, regal display of calmness even during most climatic/titanic moments & brutal aggresiveness slicing countless soldiers epitomizes his Fuhrer status.

Pyron in the Darkstalkers Revenge OVA is an absolute badass. He just walks through everyone's attacks and keeps talking with that awesome voice of his. Both his english and japanese voice actors are really good, but the english VA stands out a lot more cause it's David Kaye.

"To me, your so-called power is barely sport! My power is the greatest in the Universe!"

Even to this day, one of my all time favorite characters is Legato Bluesummers from Trigun/Trigun Maximum. He's such a creepy awesome character, especially in the manga where he slowly devolves into a maniac while still keeping everything that was badass about him. Plus he acts as the perfect contrast to Vash the Stampede where their ideology and just completely opposite characterization clash. Doesn't hurt he also has a kickass voice, both JPN and DUB.
