Clickbait title ftw. But serious question, do you think there will always be stigma around the name? Calling your child it in particular. I find it all kind of silly really, if people are calling their child Adolf or Hitler(and aren't at all German) unless they're raising their child in a horrible way it's kind of insane that they can have kids taken away from them for that. And the kid in question is obviously highly likely to be bullied, just because they have the same name as one of the most if not the most infamous men ever. Got help them if they ever try grow a moustache. Adolf means "noble wolf" that's pretty f***ing cool. So long as you're not making your child some political message, why not? Better than calling your kid Sausage or Dankstar or any of the ridiculous names celebrities come up with, imagine being named Kal-El. What if you don't even like Superman as you grow up

Adolf is still a pretty common name in Germany. There's no stigma surrounding it, which is pretty surprising because Germany has been trying to distance themselves from the 3rd Reich and the Nazi party. Pretty sure there was a case here in America where this couple named their children after Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun and had the kids taken away. It all happened because a bakery refused to put Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler on a birthday cake. |

It's not strange at all, it just shows that Germany is smarter than the average bear. There should be no stigma connected to the name (at least not the first name), there should be stigma around the person itself. Doesn't matter what his name was, he was a bad person, albeit a man who thought he did what was best for his country. |

I think if I recall correctly about that case with the birthday cake, the parents were found to be neglectful anyway. And even though I personally dislike the name for aesthetic reasons, I don't take issue with the name. Call you child Box for all I care, it doesn't affect me in the slightest. |

Yeah, I shuold have said that it was how it all started, I know the birthday cake wasn't the cause, just that it was the catalyst to set the events in motion

No, it's not. Only with older people born before WWII. The name was forbidden until 2007, nobody names their kid Adolf because everyone is going to make an obvious connection to Hitler and it'll ruin your child's life with regards to bullying in school and getting jobs. |

Don't get me wrong, there still are a couple thousand people living with the name "Adolf" in Germany. It's just that they all existed before Adolf Hitler was a thing. It has nothing to do with Germany being smart or anything, they're just like the rest of the world, they don't want their kid to share a name with an evil dictator connected to immense genocide. |

Maybe not Adolf, but Hitler is synonymous with evil and I don't see that changing anytime soon. |

It's the same with any inherent dictator who is commonly known as "evil" - people will avoid naming their children it. Perhaps things may change hundreds of years down the track but I don't see it happening soon. |

There is no such thing as evil. Adolf and Hitler should not carry a negative stigmatism, nor should the swastika. Prior to the Third Reich, it was a symbol for peace or harmony, was it not? I understand the Nazi's tainted it forever, but, it's sad and unfortunate. Adolf should carry no stigma. Neither should the last name "Hitler". Even extended family of Adolf Hitler, as long as they don't carry those same beliefs/participated in the vile acts of World War II should not be treated poorly because of their last name. Only Adolf and Hitler together should carry negativity with it wherever it goes. Same with Christopher Columbus. These monsters in history are only tainted by the totality of who they were, not a first name or a last name specifically. |

Common misconception. ![]() While it's based off of it due to Hitler's belief in Aryan supremacy, it's tilted and the tilt is definitely a factor.
He's referring to Columbus being a borderline mustache twirler in his thoughts on Native Americans "It appears to me, that the people are ingenious, and would be good servants and I am of opinion that they would very readily become Christians, as they appear to have no religion." While he's not Hitler level, still a douche. That being said, it's not really the same thing. Columbus was hundreds of years ago, Hitler wasn't even one century ago. Hitler was far worse too. |
