I'm probably alone on this one but I think that the idea of the public being able to vote in their representatives is a stupid idea. It sounds good on paper. We get given the right to place people in a position where they can relay our concerns to the government and then the government can decide to do something about it. The problem is I don't know if that happens frequently enough. Or even if it does, I watch Prime Minister's Questions and he mostly ignores all of the questions raised. Right now we have a government consistently doing the opposite of what they should be doing. It's like a running joke. Which public service will they try and dismantle next? We had education being ruined under Michael Gove and now Nicky Morgan is continuing that trend, plus we have Jeremy Hunt's inability to negotiate a reasonable contract for junior doctors threatening to undermine the NHS. On top of all that we also have a weak opposition who repeatedly fails to properly stand up to the Conservative Party and their shenanigans. On the contrary some have voted with them and some just abstain from voting, rather than daring to oppose them. So it's quite interesting to watch some recent sessions from The House of Lords where our unelected peers seem to actually be debating serious issues. Especially when in the commons, (the people we elect) they are name calling, loudly jeering and basically acting like a classroom of 12 year olds after the teacher's left the room for a few minutes. What does it say about our collective judgement that we continuously elect pompous, lying imbeciles? Now perhaps I making a crazy, fallacious argument here but it seems to me that we might be better off just letting the Lords make all the decisions since they seem to be the only people with some common sense in their brains. Well, at least most of them. I'm well aware that a few of them are boorish and undeserving. But much less so than the commons I must say. |

It is stupid. Votes here in the United States don't mean anything because our delegates can vote for whoever they want, not just vote the part of the population they represent. It happens in many other countries too, rigged or pointless elections and we get these idiot politicians who vote based upon what they want and not what the people want. I don't know what goes in in the House of Lords or how they actually get there but having a group of people who inherit their position of power without the consent or blessing of the majority of the people doesn't seem like a good idea to me. |

http://www.parliament.uk/business/lords/whos-in-the-house-of-lords/members-and-their-roles/how-members-are-appointed/ So it's not entirely undemocratic just because we aren't lining up at the polls to vote in our favourite wannabe lord. They are appointed due to a life time of service to the government and/or the country. More than can be said for certain politicians who get elected on the basis of false promises and charismatic personalities. Perhaps I might not be so supportive of them if I wasn't always reading how they continuously block stupid ideas put forward by the house of commons. Since they are not tied to any political leader, they can actually vote based on whether the legislation is sensible or not, rather than just because it fits with a party line. |
