You've probably all heard the expression, used for when someone states the obvious: "In other news, water is wet" Wet definition: "covered or saturated with water or another liquid." So...surely water can't be wet if it IS water? It can't be covered in itself as a liquid. Ice opens up a whole 'nother can of wtf 'cause it's solid but can technically be covered in water, however that water is usually just itself melting so is it technically wet or just...water? I guess you could call water wet if it was covered in oil or another liquid that doesn't mix with it? These are some life altering musings... |

Hmm, strange. I've never actually used 'wet' to describe 'water', I don't think. I guess you're right, only things that get inflicted with water or other liquids would be considered wet. |

Water is only wet if Chuck Norris waters it. (Was that a good one? ^haha) |

But is the water wetting the original water or just adding to the wetness?
That's brilliant in an awful way I've never really considered this before but had to think of a sarcastic reply to someone saying "In other news, water is wet" and I was just like holy s***, is water wet? Can it even be wet!? So technically speaking, no unless it's in solid form I guess. |

That one makes less sense though... So...a bottle of water is wet because it contains water? Or is just the water inside it wet? The Oxford definition is what I posted although way down as a mass noun it says: "Liquid that makes something damp" So does that make some liquids not wet since not all can make things damp... And what of things that can't get damp? Is water not wet in relation to waterproof materials? Language is weird. |
