He seems to forget the multiple times he writes Gohan as wanting to train and the like to better himself but then throwing it all out the window on a whim. He makes Gohan a stupid character in the process, but that's more indicative of how bad a writer Toriyama is in the first place. We shouldn't be surprised, given before Super released Toriyama outright said he did not care about consistency.
