Is Dragon Ball Xenoverse good or not?

(I'm not quite sure if this thread fits in this section. Move it if it's not the case (: )

So ... I wanted to buy my brother DB Xenoverse for his birthday, since he doesn't have any DB games for his PS4, but I don't know if he'll like it.

He previous DB games were Battle of Z & Raging Blast 2 (PS3) and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (PS2).
He didn't like BoZ at all but enjoyed Budokai Tenkaichi and Raging Blast.

How is Xenoverse compared to those games?
And do you think he'd enjoy the game? I'm asking because I've never played it before and neither has he.

General opinion is that it's better than BoZ, but worse than Raging Blast 2 and the Budokai games.

For my own part it's enjoyable, but flawed, getting moves can be really dependent on rng, and the battle system itself is rather simple, having about 3 combo inputs, even if if there a few variations in how the animations and attacks themselves play out, and you have 4 Special moves,2 two super moves, and an escape move. I think if you're really not sure I'd say it's not a completely safe bet, he might like it, he might not. It's better than Battle of Z at least, and the character creation is pretty nice to use, but overall I generally give this a tentative recommendation.

Also it can get pretty grindy at points, so keep that in mind.

Well it's certainly far better than BOZ I'll give it that, how when compared to the others though I don't know. Xenoverse is a good game in general, I'm sure your brother will enjoy it because it has a unique story, character creation and even more enjoyable thinks that will get his attention. The gameplay is simple (perhaps a bit repetitive) but still fun. I believe that if he truly likes DBZ and all Xenoverse will be good for him ^_^ .

It is a great game. If you want a DBZ PS3 game it is the best one out there imo. Next to that would be DB RGB 2. Don't waste your time with Battle of Z, that game was a major disappointment. But I highly recommend XenoVerse to any DBZ gaming fan.

Edit: In comparison to the other games, you could say its a mix of Battle of Z and Raging Blast 2. It has way better control to it then Battle of Z does and the storyline is really fun.

I'm pretty sure it's better received than Raging Blast (which isn't that well received themselves).

Anyways, yes... it's easily the best DBZ game to come out for the HD consoles though not without it's flaws (several broken mechanics, aforementioned grinding, lack of certain basic features in a fighting game, etc.). Just don't expect Budokai 3/Infinite World tier or even BT3 tier greatness.

I definitely think it's a must buy, based on the fact there hasn't been anything like it prior, to my knowledge anyway. Personally, I think the gameplay needs some major improvements, but the customization is great, and the story is a fun romp, even if it is nonsensical.

Story-wise, no. Some say Super's story seems "fan-ficish," but XV's story is the one that fits that perfectly.

It was okay, but it was far from Raging Blast or the Tenkaichi series imo. Probably one of the worst DBZ games I've played, but since I skipped battle of Z and ultimate tenkaichi, along with some other infamous ones like sagas, that isn't saying much.

The 3v3 mechanic just completely ruined everything. It turns the fight into clusterf***s, and less of a fighting game and more of a beat 'em up or something. And since the mechanics are made with 3v3 in made, 1v1 battles are extremely oversimplified, even by DBZ game standards (since I know a lot of people complained that Tenkaichi and RB games had little depth to them - well this has even less).

The RPG and custom character elements create an extremely unbalanced online, though in single player it doesn't matter too much.

It can be fun, but it's honestly a giant mess that gets carried heavily by the fact it's Dragon Ball.

You didn't like the story? I agree it is pretty fan-fictiony but I really like it. It could be more of a required taste I guess.

Fan service. I'm trying to write it the appropriate way in my own "Z" fan novel.

It was kinda fan fiction-y, but given that you play as a custom character, it's kinda to be expected. I'm just happy that they stuck with the actual DBZ storyline and just gave it a twist, so you're familiar with it, but it's still new. The Saiyan and Freeza sagas were good, but things kinda just went downhill from there, the Cell and Boo sagas were massively skipped over.

Agreed, especially the Buu Saga. You didn't even get to fight the different versions of Super Buu.

Yes I think Xenoverse is very good and a must buy for a DBZ fan cause it offers a new unique awesome storyline and not the basic DBZ one, the fighting and graphics arc cool and it's generally a good game, I believe it's something that a DBZ fan should experience.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I wasn't that high on it. I got it cheap on an Xbox marketplace sale and I actually regret buying it, even at a discounted price, because I haven't played it much. The entire point of the game is the combat, and for me it was way too simple. I got a lot of gameplay out of Budokai Tenkaichi 3, which is one of my favourite games period, and this just doesn't hold a candle to that in my opinion.
