If the Earth suddenly stopped spinning I remember hearing in a what if on the history channel that everyone would be sent flying at over 700 miles an hour or something like that along with anything that wasn't bolted hard to the ground. It'd be a nasty mess honestly, bunch of lasagna sauce and noodles that were once human beings everywhere. |

Taken from this site: http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/ask/q1168.html If the Earth stopped spinning suddenly, the atmosphere would still be in motion with the Earth's original 1100 mile per hour rotation speed at the equator. All of the land masses would be scoured clean of anything not attached to bedrock. This means rocks, topsoil, trees, buildings, your pet dog, and so on, would be swept away into the atmosphere. If the process happened gradually over billions of years, the situation would be very different, and it is this possibility which is the most likely as the constant torquing of the Sun and Moon upon the Earth finally reaches it's conclusion. If the rotation period slowed to 1 rotation every 365 days a condition called 'sun synchronous', every spot in the Earth would have permanent daytime or nighttime all year long. This is similar to the situation on the Moon where for 2 weeks the front-side is illuminated by the Sun, and for 2 weeks the back side is illuminated. This situation for the Earth is not the condition of 'stopped' rotation, but it is as close as the laws of physics will let the Earth get. It sounds pretty terrifying, but also kinda awesome. |

I thought supervolcanoes have to be underwater to help form hypercanes basically. And the rotation I meant is based off this one: https://youtu.be/DbXtsomif7Y |

Yellowstone is easily the scariest though. I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but, the polar shift. You know, the north and south poles basically... swapping. I'm not 100% sure on the science here, so, if curious, you'll have to look it up. But when I learned about it in Uni, it seemed like it could have some extremely devastating events. Especially on humanity. |

That makes no sense. How would they block sunlight if they're underwater? They'd cause tsunamis more likely. As for the MegaTsunami thing... Those are pretty unpredictable. That's all I can say. |

If the water's stupid hot wouldn't that also make the water surface temperature 120+ Fahrenheit? That evaporating in the sky can give birth to the engine which could potentially cause a hypercane. |

Have you guys ever heard of the Space straw? Basically the idea is some super evil dude builds a straw that reaches into the void of space and essentially vacuums the atmosphere out. It's brutal sounding. |

You heard about that on Vsauce, didn't you Ulti? @Snake I don't think it works that way... The water might get hot, yes, but most of the times the volcanoes are deep underwater and you can barely feel the heat coming from beneath (or so I've heard), and even if it got hot enough to turn the ocean's water into steam, that would probably create a storm, and possibly not a very big one. |

It would take a lot of energy to cause the oceans to boil and turn to steam. It is impossible for anything in nature to cause it here on Earth, it would have to be due to the actions of mankind or aliens. Now, in a million years or so when the Earth is closer to the sun maybe it'd naturally occur. |

No not turning the water to steam but just boiling it to the point where the steam goes into the air. |
