Might have been a topic like this before but f*** it I'm making a new one. What feasible scenarios could make us go extinct? Try not to make your lists too big so other people can post additions too. I'm going to start with aliens. A species with the technology to reach Earth from their home planet could probably destroy us. There probably wouldn't be an occupation either. They might just kill us all from space without us ever knowing what hit us. |

Meteors and the like. We can keep track of some but if something big is hurtling towards us from space right now we'll have no f***ing clue since there's no light for it to reflect here, I think the only way you can tell is if people happen to notice constellations are being blocked by something. That'd be pretty scary, we'd probably have weeks/months notice and that would be it. Though some rich and influential people would probably survive, I'm sure there are some decent bunkers hidden away. Be a pretty piss poor existence that would probably fizzle out sooner or later though. World War 3 is an obvious one that scarily could happen so easily, all it takes is one big country making a massively stupid decision for things to heat up and people are certainly capable of that. Viruses and stuff I don't think we have to worry about unless there are some crazy mutations but as I mentioned in the other topic fertility may become an issue in the future, due to all the chemicals we put in water. Be it directly or indirectly from people urinating medication etc etc out, it all gets recycled eventually and s*** that goes in water goes back in your body. Solar flares are a potential candidate also. Not sure what's scarier the randomness of that or meteors. It'd just be horrible to wake up and see "Yeah we're f***ed you have about 3 hours to live" one day. |

I just had to handle a spam-one word post. Refrain from said posts outside the spam section. The moderation is going to get heavier on those from here on. Learn from The LAZ' mistake. haha. (seriously, no more please) Edited by Professor Gohan, Mar 30 2016, 10:29 AM.

Another possibility, among the many things that one could list, is the Yellowstone National Park Supervolcano underneath... well, Yellowstone National Park in the United States. I think it's in Wyoming mostly but parts of it are in Idaho and Montana I think. Or I could be completely wrong on my geography in any case, it is past its projected eruption date and when it does go off, the entire world will likely suffer another mass extinction event.

I feel like that one is somewhat survivable, living afterwards would be harsh but it's mostly America that would get f***ed by that the rest of the world just needs to outlive the ash cloud. Far enough away from it people could probably survive in domes, after the cloud dispersed sunlight would still be there to grow plants(or we could just use UV lights) It'd still be devastating though doubt we'd ever come back from it in full. Getting clean water would probably be the biggest problem. |

Apparently a supervolcano could cause a hypercane, though. So, if one hypothetical doesn't finish everyone off, the other one will try. Or Emmerdale. Edited by Sandy Shore, Mar 30 2016, 01:26 PM.

A bunker? There's no such thing as a bunker that could handle something like a really big asteroid. ![]() Bunkers can handle an atomic bomb just fine, maybe. A meteor, depending where it falls, is going to mess up everything. Worse, it could make everything in the planets go berserk. There'd be tsunamis everywhere, non stop angry volcanoes, storms and hurricanes and more. That'd be scary as hell. |

How can a supervolcano cause a hypercane though? If the sun gets blocked won't it get cold? |

From Wikipedia: A hypercane is a hypothetical class of extreme hurricane that could form if ocean temperatures reached around 50 °C (122 °F), which is 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than the warmest ocean temperature ever recorded. Such an increase could be caused by a large asteroid or comet impact, a large supervolcanic eruption, or extensive global warming. It might get cold, but those extreme temperatures are not going to bother a freaking volcano. |

Well yeah like you said depending on where it falls. If it was on one side of the planet people in sophisticated bunkers on the other side would survive it most likely. They'd probably never be able to live on the surface again but humanity would live on in some capacity. I wonder how long for? If the human race is to continue I read that you need at least 64 males and 64 females to have a diverse enough gene pool. |

Point taken, but I'm not to keen on how many supervolcanoes we have barring Yellowstone, but isn't it above the water? |

And my contribution to the thread, if the planet stops to spin. I think this is a torturous and slowly agonizing way to go about. And in the long run, it'll be this way forever until something or outside force gives us a push. |

Bro, that's a ridiculous apocalyptic event. There's less than zero probabilities of that happening. It would be horrible if it somehow happened, though. |
