I'm mostly talking about the Premier League but if you know of a notorious referee from other leagues then feel free to s*** on them here as well :p

I think for the Premier League it's a toss up between Lee Mason and Andre Mariner. Although Phil O'Dowd isn't far off.

I'm not a fan of chastising refs, because they are doing the best they can. They don't have an agenda regardless of what people think. Referees are in a no win situation. If they keep their whistles in their pockets, people will complain because they aren't "protecting the best players" and are making it difficult for "bigger teams". If they call every foul, people will complain that they are calling too many fouls.

Yeah referees make mistakes, but that's to be expected. The players make mistakes all the time. They're human. Referees, except in very few occassions, are never the difference between a win and a loss.

While I agree that refs don't have an agenda, it's wrong to shield them from criticism. Fact is, referees can have an influence over the game. Giving a penalty in a tight game or sending a player off is going to influence how the game goes and what the outcome is going to be. Making mistakes here and there is fine, like you said they are human. But there's referees that are consistently making poor decisions week after week and it's frustrating to watch. No one wants to finish a game and at the end all you can talk about is the ref because they were so poor but it happens often. Things won't get any better if everyone just ignores it.

I think Martin Atkinson is s***e, don't know why he's constantly represented in UEFA competitions because he's woeful. Michael Oliver, now that man is a referee.

I do acknowledge that referee decisions can have an impact on a game, but if you want to boil down your team's loss solely to referee mistakes, that's where you lose me.

Look at Arsenal. Could I harp on about refs costing us games? Sure. But the fact of the matter is that Arsenal doesn't convert their clear cut chances. Arsenal has undisciplined defenders that get us killed by any decent counter attacking team. We don't win the title or contend for CL because our squad isn't good enough, not because the refs make mistakes. Every coach will tell you that the team could have executed better to get a W, instead of blaming the referee.

Another perfect example is today's Bayern vs Juventus game. Juve absolutely had them on the ropes, 2-0 down. Bayern looked sloppy in possession due to Juve's upfield pressing. Morata was denied a goal due to a poor offside call, but Juve didn't lose because of that. They lost because they let Bayern do whatever they wanted with the ball and had 10 men behind it. If Juve didn't take their foot off the gas, they certainly beat Bayern.
