Any americans here, can you explain to me what the difference between a democrat and a republican is? I know it varies from person to person, but what's the difference between to two parties? |

The difference is really negligible, one openly wants to restrict your rights and the other says they're all for the rights of Americans and then they try to pass laws banning abortion and same-sex marriage. Republican or Democrat, it's all the same. stuff just on different issues. |

Democrats are Liberals, Republicans are Conservatives. That's your basic fundamental difference, one leans to the left and the other to the right. So Democrats tend to value things like social security, right to unionise, healthcare reform, support for gay and minority rights, access to abortion etc. Republicans on the other hand would be more supportive of policies such as the free market, small government, state rights, immigration reform, protection of second amendment rights and a strong military. Those are massive generalizations for both parties though, some Republicans are quite moderate and more centrist and others are far right, like the Tea Party. The Democrats are the same, though I'd say there's less true left wing Democrats because American politics is quite conservative to begin with. Even Bernie Sanders was an independent before running for President. I think the idea that they're 'both the same as each other' is pretty naive, there's huge differences in the parties. |

There's certainly a massive difference between the two parties. Republicans certainly hold a far more right winged area as already noted. They're Conservatives and Traditionalists of America. Democrats favor the left and more like to support progressive notions. There's certain points on how far right or how far left they may consider themselves, but this in and on itself is the main gist. And unfortunately for Republicans, America is far more progressive than it was in the past. I've made this point before and I'll continue making it. America is definitely more progressive and left winged. I won't be the nice guy here and with people like Trump and Cruz running around, I feel I should be rather tense. The ideologies Republican and Right Winged Conservative's hold are essentially, outdated if not plain wrong. Edited by EMIYA, Mar 6 2016, 11:18 PM.

Thanks for a thorough and presice explanation, Copy and Brofist. I was just curious after watching the latest season of House of Cards. Underwood seems more of a republican than a democrat and the republican candidate he's running against seems more like a democrat. That's essentially why I asked. |

From what I've gathered, the issues of Right and Left Winged politics is notably different, seemingly in terms of intensity, when compared to European politics. So what may come off as Right Wing/Conservative in the USA, may come off as more moderate or Left Wing in another country, or vise versa.

In a nutshell, Republicans:- -> Business -> Anti-Bureaucracy -> Emphasis on Personal Responsibility -> Pro Religion Democrats:- -> They have a huge emphasis on Government. Like structured Government. That is they want almost everything to be solved by the Government. Usually, Democrats are more likely to be favored by low income urban minorities, young people and Republicans are favored by middle and upper classes(including white minorities etc). |

I agree it is the same. They get the same results but they just use a different means of getting there. Same thing with any government in the world. |

People, they aren't the same so please stop suggesting that they are. By this point, Democrats and Republicans hold vastly different view points, not only politically, but in almost all points as well. We've established many of those points already on this topic and the differences between them that Democrats and Republicans support are practically night and day. It almost seems difficult to find something the two groups even moderately agree on. This isn't like some off shoot of Christianity or something, where you just have minor differences to a common goal. The goals of Democrats and Republicas, regardless of what some may say, are vastly different. Again, this has already bee touched up in the topic as is. They aren't two sides of the same coin and they aren't trying to seek out the same thing. More often than not, one side screws up royally and the other side has to take completely different actions. 15th President, Buchannan, and the Democratic Party at the time, screwed up so royally, he split the country in two. It took Lincoln, the National Union Party and a Civil War to fix up that huge f*** up. For 8 years, The Bush Administration, the Republican was massively incompetent, leading to a terrible time in the USA. Say what you wish about the Obama Administration, but you can't tell me things aren't better than it was during Bush's reign in office. Two different terms, two completely different results. There's cases where the ideologies of Democrats and Republicans were once opposite and perhaps at some point they did hold similar view points. But today, the view points have become incredibly different. At best, they may focus on similar subjects, but their interactions towards said subjects are notably different. |
