Saw this on the news. England generally sing 'God Save The Queen', which is the British national anthem, whereas Wales & Scotland (not sure about Northern Ireland) have their own anthems. Do you think England should follow their lead and leave 'God Save The Queen' for purely British events? Or do you think 'God Save The Queen' is the way to go? I honestly have no opinion on it at all, but thought it'd be interesting to see other people's opinions. |

I think it makes sense to have the song about the queen for British events and Jerusalem as our individual country's anthem. Scotland, Irelands and Wales all have their own, we should too and it should be Jerusalem. |

Yeah I think that England should have it's own anthem, absolutely. And I'd love to change the British one too. Call me overly sensitive but it'd be cool to have one that doesn't actively call upon colonial history and which doesn't refer to 'rebellious Scots to crush'.

I don't think England needs its own national anthem, but I agree that the British one could do with some revision. Edited by Sandy Shore, Mar 4 2016, 06:04 PM.

Why don't you think it needs it's own anthem? Everyone else has one. |

Because England already uses the British one as its own. It's not surprising considering it's the predominate culture in Britain. England doesn't need it's own, but if it wanted its own then I nominate God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols. Edited by Sandy Shore, Mar 4 2016, 07:06 PM.

I think that it would be good for England to have its own national anthem so that there could be a sense of English identity beyond a British identity. And I mean, using God Save The Queen as both the English national anthem and the UK anthem suggests that the UK is a union that England is the dominant force in - which everything from polite conversation to the way the Better Together campaign regarding Scottish independence disagrees with. England is the biggest nation in the union but by effectively imposing England national anthem on the rest of the UK it also implies it's the most important. |

Nah, we need to get to the heart of English culture. What is that? Drinking dangerous amounts of alcohol and watching football. So we need the song that best reflects that. So Tubthumping by Chumbawumba it is. |

Actually, I think there is a pretty strong English identity. I can see how it might be deemed arrogance by the English to use the British anthem as their own, but one might argue they use it because they're supporters of Britain as a whole, and not just England. Still, I don't think you're wrong in suggesting it might be good if they had their own. It lacks the venom of my suggestion, but, I actually think your choice would be incredibly popular with the English. Edited by Sandy Shore, Mar 4 2016, 07:38 PM.
