What do you think about localisation? Do you think it is needed?

I personally don't believe it's required any more. If you don't understand a cultural reference then you can look it up using a search engine. If you are offended by a cross, sexual references or satanic imagery then you probably shouldn't leave your house any time soon considering how much of it is rubbed in our faces everywhere. Perhaps before the invention of the internet it made more sense as we generally didn't know much about foreign cultures. However today there's no real reason for it in my opinion.

I think certain phrases should be redone for the local culture. Just certain local things that don't work in the language you're porting the game to. Changing entire characters and imagery isn't a thing that should be done I think.

That sort of thing is fine and mostly comes under the translation aspect of localisation. When they start removing assets, scenes and even entire maps then that's too far.

Yeah, I agree that phrases should be adjusted accordingly if needed, but I don't think anything more than translation is necessary. Personally, I'd want to experience the game as much in it's original form as possible. Same goes for books, films, TV shows: the only thing that should be changed is the language.

i think ur confusing localization with censorship. localization is just the process of preparing a game for import. there's nothing inherently bad about it and if you expect to be able to play anything produced outside the UK then it's necessary

censorship is when they take out or change certain things during the localization process

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah I don't think any media should be censored unless it's almost outright trying to do harm.

They shouldn't cut out black characters in GTA saying the N word because that's what people like those characters say, why pretend the N word(or at least it's igga version) isn't a common greeting or casual slur?

It'd be the same as making a "historically accurate" movie set around the time black people were slaves and pretending they were never discriminated against.
Or that women were allowed to vote way back because it might offend people who don't want to hear about it.

I think it's dumb that some countries like Australia and China have strict laws on this s*** as well as violence with all the evidence there is to suggest video games turn us in to murderers which is...well, there's no evidence.

Lord knows I had sex with and then killed my fair share of prostitutes in Vice City, that s*** is extremely helpful. 25 bonus health and you can get your money back plus some extra? Hold on while I hit her with a baseball bat eighteen thousand times just to make sure she's dead. I've only killed 8 in real life as a direct result of that.

Something like what Japan does with Fallout and the weapon the "Fat Man" is okay though, while it is the sort of name that weapon would be called in the Fallout universe it's a little insensitive a name so the Japanese changing it to "Nuke launcher" or whatever they call it is fine.
(the Fat Man is what one of the nukes dropped on Japan was called for anyone who doesn't know)

Deciding everything is insensitive or offensive is just silly, might as well just make every game the same. Why have a game with an interesting story when we can all just play Tetris? Forever.
Although slow the f*** down, what if Tetris is just a metaphor for capitalism and how the western culture of greed is doomed to fail? Shut that s*** down right now.
Pong. Forever.
Unless it promotes human conflict and...and...it's typically black and white, that's probably racist somehow.

What will you do when you get old?

I would *censored* the *censored* out *censored* Lara Croft's *censored* with *censored* in a baking hot *censored* on a Tuesday *censored* in November *censored* Redacted

Content deemed too inappropriate for audiences under the age of 43.

Censorship is actually a huge deal. Like you said, if they can't handle something they don't like them maybe they should lock themselves in their house. The world doesn't care if you're offended, why should they be catered to when in the end their opinion is about as relevant as yelling water in an airplane?

I actually had a post removed on here due to censorship, it was a spurdo .gif where le honest merchant had le american bear hooked up to a conveyor belt that just fed hamburgers to him, and someone or multiple people got upset. It's not too big a deal though, the moderator who removed it was just doing his job.

Is it censorship if the translators remove something because they think it will improve the game? Whoever's doing the localization is in the business of selling the game after all.

I suppose it's still a form of censorship, sort of. Still, no one's stopping you from importing the original if you're so inclined.

I don't think the kind of censorship found in localizations has anything to do with the "classic" censorship.

Quality control is different from censorship. If something doesn't work right, and you fix it so it does, that is quality control. If something works right, but you don't like the message it is sending or are worried someone somewhere might get offended, and you remove it, that is censorship.
