Why did Vegeta not use SSJ Grade 3 when using the Final Flash against Cell?

I might be wrong, but I don't think Vegeta was ever actually confirmed to have the form. Trunks says something like "Dad must have realised this, that's why he didn't use it" (extreme paraphrasing). It's left kind of vague on whether that means Vegeta knew that'd happen so he never tried learning the form, or if he learned the form and then realised the weakness.

For another explanation, Vegeta figured if he powered up, Cell would get too scared and wouldn't do his whole "stand in place to take the attack" thing.

I agree with Clearin. That was a moment of staying on the fine line, and that plan didn't even work. But the time it would have taken Vegeta to assume the bulkiness probably would have delayed his FF attack.

Thala na Gethu!

By FAR, my most fav moment in Cell Arc, along with Goku's Instant Transmission Kamehameha & SSJ2 Gohan/SPC KHH Clash

Everything from its high-quality animation, pacing, drama, music (JPN) was perfect!

OT: I always assumed he used Grade 3 during the Final Flash "formation" moments

Like Veggie was already bulked. But as he was challenging Cell to try taking his attack head-on, its only natural to assume he uses every ounce of energy into his finisher.

I dont think the speed-kill would have any significant effect on the effectiveness of Final Flash to be frank

Its only when Hand-to-Hand fight, as we saw USSJ Trunks was gassed. My poiny is as long you use amped chi blasts as Grade 3, it'll rival even SSJ2-tier

Besides, Veggie was static charging his blast like for what? 20 minutes? Thats a big amount of time to power-up & then pour your chi into Final Flash

My 2 cents

It's also possible that Vegeta was confident that his attack in Grade 2 would obliterate Cell.
In addition to this, I'm confident that Vegeta had Grade 3 considering that Trunks suggested that he could use it, and Goku himself was shown to be able to use it without even really training or using Grade 2. This makes me believe that Grade 2 and 3 are achieved the same way, and that those two transformations are more learned than achieved spontaneously and separately via some catastrophic incident or extreme conditions.

Krillin did state that Cell was holding back a lot of power, but Vegeta seemed to absorbed in himself to realize this.

It's also clear that Vegeta forgot about Cell's regeneration factor; considering he obviously realized his mistake when Cell regrew his arm.

In addition to this, delay of the attack while Vegeta bulked up into Grade 3 wouldn't really seem like a problem considering that Cell was perfectly willing to stand still and take the Final Flash head on to prove his superiority to Vegeta.

It may be that it wouldn't have done anything. The Grade III form surely seems to act more on the lines of just pumping ki through your muscles until they become engorged. It's not so much as a transformation as it is a way to increase your physical strength alone. It's why Cell calls Trunks out on it. Instead of showing real power, the only thing he did was engorge his own muscles and make himself slower as a result. He may have had more "physical" power at his disposal but other than that, he hardly changed at all.

Vegeta was probably already pumping out his full power in terms of ki. Using Grade III may do nothing more than just engorge his muscles and put a huge amount of strain on his body.

I don't believe he achieved the form and was just going off what he knew about his current state, then realized how useless the next form would be.

However, I do understand why some believe he could transform.

both goku, vegeta and cell can do it. apparently it isnt very complicated thing to do.
im guessing piccolo, krillin, teen gohan and others can. even master roshi did it more than once.

---------

he had no reason to go grade 3.
final flash is EXTREMELY strong attack. its vegeta's planet buster ki attack.
if that thing hits someone, its insta-kill. the reason cell didnt die is because vegeta didnt destroy his core.
*the core is the piccolo gene. piccolo's core is the head.
