Can I have some help with Football Manager?

Crazy Awesome Legend

On Football Manager 16 I have created a club in the 11th tier of English football. This means that I basically started a team with no players in it. So far the only two players I've signed are two very good goalkeepers. However for the rest of the team, I have no clue what to look for in terms of stats. I have masking switched off as scouting at this level is next to impossible. So I can see information on all players in the market. But I'm stuck as to what makes a good defender besides strength, jumping and tackling. Do the other stats matter? Then there's midfielders. What numbers should I be looking out for there? Forwards are pretty easy. Pace, strength and shooting I would think are the big three here.

So even though I'm confident I know of the main stats for each position, I'm not so sure about other qualities they might need.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

It really varies by position and what you're asking for from each player:

Centre Back: Tackling, Positioning, Heading, Marking, Concentration, Strength, Jumping Reach
Full Backs: Tackling, Positioning, Crossing, Dribbling, Acceleration, Pace, Strength
Defensive Midfield: Tackling, Passing, Work Rate, Determination, Strength, First Touch, Technique
Attacking Midfield: Passing, Technique, First Touch, Dribbling, Long Shots, Creativity, Flair, Finishing
Centre Midfield: Just combinations of Attacking and Defensive
Wingers: Acceleration, Pace, Crossing, Dribbling, Passing, Technique, First Touch, Creativity, Flair, Finishing, Off The Ball
Target Man Striker: Heading, Finishing, Jumping Reach, Strength, Composure, Off The Ball, Passing
Pacey Striker: Finishing, Acceleration, Pace, Composure, Off The Ball, First Touch, Technique, Heading

I've tried to list them in order of importance. The higher up the league system you go, the more stats you try to tick off, but in the lower leagues it's probably enough to just check off 3 or 4 as high as you can get them. I haven't listed Acceleration and Pace for all positions, but that's never a bad thing. Same thing for Work Rate and Determination. I haven't listed Stamina for any position, but that's always a plus. Captains most important stat is Leadership.

Edit: Also for Goalkeepers, you want every goalkeeping stat as high as possible except for Eccentricity and Tendency to Punch, which you want low (although if they're high, it's not a deal breaker, it just makes them a little more prone to errors).

"Next time?"
"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."
