There was a time when The Simpsons was one of the smartest and funniest cartoons on television. But then something changed. What was it and when? Was it a slow decline or was it sudden? I seem to recall it was around the episode where they took up professional tennis. I remember thinking that the colours were all washed out and the episode was more absurd than I was used to. |

I think it's got progressively worse because it's both been on for however many years now and because they have to try not to offend so many people now. Which is why I prefer South Park, they don't give a s***, they won't censor their comedy just because someone will throw a hissy fit like South Park doesn't make jokes out of absolutely everything. Remember the episode where Homer was scared Bart was gay or something? Imagine that aired today, show would be ripped apart. Homer used to be somewhat homophobic now he's accepting. I'm not saying they should have kept him homophobic but it's little changes like that that have made it a completely different show. Largely though they're probably just out of ideas/people are tired of watching it because it's been on like 20+ years or some s***. |

Well I won't pretend to know the answer to what exactly has went wrong with The Simpsons because I haven't seen every episode, especially in later series, so I'm far from an expert. I do know that you're wrong though. One of the very few recent episodes I watched had one of Marge's sisters (can't remember which) come out as gay, and Marge took it really badly. The PC Police didn't tear the show apart over that so I assume they've not been going out of their way to tiptoe around growing sensitivities. (Good try though, maybe one day you'll blame something on people being too easily offended these days and not look like a f***ing idiot). You're much more on the ball here I think. It's just been on tv for so long now. I largely think the only reason it's still going is the huge merchandising income it must have, combined with the nearly infinite levels of goodwill audiences still have for it, due to its 10+ years of absolutely stellar comedy before it started to decline. |

Did I accidentally piss in your coffee or something? Jesus...no need to be a douche. And I doubt that episode was about Marge trying to make her sister not be gay she just didn't accept it, Homer was acting like he'd failed as a father because his son might be gay. Was that episode even recent? 'cause I feel like I remember that and I haven't watched the show in years. |

I think it's more that he's kind of tired of seeing you misattribute these things to sjws and such, especially when you're admitted you've never even met anyone irl like that. I know I got annoyed with the fashion thread at least. Overall I'm pretty sure pcness has jutting to do with it. Good humour is good regardless of if it's politically correct or not, you don't need to be offensive to be funny. Challenging maybe, but not offensive. Edited by Tinny, Feb 9 2016, 03:38 AM.

I don't care what he thinks about what I said, no reason to act like a child about it. And I have to have met someone like that to see the troves of people on social media going crazy over inane s***? That makes no sense. Go on Buzzfeed for 5 minutes and you'll see thousands of people offended over mundane things like a glass bottle somewhat looking like a dick. Then s*** like that gets spread around and many others think "I should be offended about that too!" Not like I claimed the whole reason The Simpsons isn't as good is because of that, it's just a likely contributing factor considering the show has been criticized a lot over the years for various reasons and now many more people have access to the internet to convene and moan about their issues with things. Forgot about the fashion thread actually. |

Patty (Marge's sister) came out as a lesbian over 10 years ago, in a 2005 episode. Not exactly recent. I personally don't like the show as much now due to two reasons, 1 being that the animation is lifeless and flat ever since it became HD, but the biggest issues is just the comedy. It just doesn't work anymore. Most jokes are terrible, and even if they come up with a good joke, they ruin it with bad timing, bad delivery, dragging it out too much, or having to explain it. I've watched bits of pieces of it recently, and it isn't the worst thing ever, it can still get a laugh or two, but it's definitely not the genius it used to be. |

It was a good sitcom, now it's a silly cartoon. That's the difference. |

I've never really paid any attention to who writes it, do new people write it or has it been the same people all these years? I don't get how the quality could dip so low with the same writers aside from them just being exhausted mentally from doing it. The main thing that put me of it many years ago is all the adult humour(once I learned what half of the stuff they say meant) It's just a bit...weird in my mind, its supposed to be a family show but can have pretty graphic innuendo's and such. I just find that odd, you wouldn't watch a Disney movie and expect such blatant sexual references and such. Remember watching quite a few oldish episodes and thinking "Wow, they aired that to kids?" Not that that's why it declined just that put me off personally. I prefer Family Guy and the like for being up front, if there's not a sex joke in a Family Guy episode then the planets have probably aligned and the universe is about to implode. EDIT Pel yeah, that sums it up completely. It's not smart or entertaining now. Edited by Steve, Feb 9 2016, 04:40 AM.

After the movie. And that movie wasn't even that great. From a personal point of view, it all went downhill after the year 2000, since the spanish voice actor for Homer (who Matt Groening himself called him the best dubbed voice for Homer in all of Europe) died, and while they replaced him with a very close friend who had a similar voice, Homer just wasn't the same. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |
