Thoughts on Tien

For most part in Z, Tien's character was "been there, done that"

If you watch carefully, throughout DBZ's whopping 291 episodes you can only recall 2 memorable/relevant/badass scene with Tien in it

1. Tien's Ki Ko Ho against Semi Perfect Cell for 16 & 18 to escape

2. Deflecting Buutenks attack to save Dende

Ofc, some moments like his valiant suicidal attack against Nappa to avenge Chizotzu etc

But his character was a caricature. UNLIKE in DB

His intro itself was unique. TOEI's filler showed how Tien & Goku were tangled in Inoshikacho issue

His participation in 22nd TB & learning KHH in matter of seconds against Jackie Chun was exhilarating. Not to mention how his gradual transformation frm assasin to an honored Martial Arts pugilist (transition frm Crane to Tutle Hermit's school) was integral to the plot, which sealed his long-term association with Z-fighters

His role in Piccolo Daimou Arc was fine too. Learnt Mafuba to avenge Roshi. Or his face-off against Cyborg Tao Pai Pai at 23rd TB which was poetic.

He was Goku's first true rival and should have remained his rival. Piccolo and Vegeta are cheap rehashes of Tenshinhan.

It wasn't gradual at all. He just had one talk with Roshi and then suddenly during his match with Goku, he decided he no longer wanted to be an assassin.

Lame conclusion to his character arc. Tenshinhan becoming a good guy should have been something that happened over the course of the series.

His fight with Jackie Chun alone marked his transition imo

He figured Roshi disguised as Jackie & his words of advice "do not choose the path of darkness/evil" & subsequent surrender by ring-out pissed Tien.

Pissed for Roshi's contradicatory & the big-hearted gesture to give-up as the "time for youngsters to lead have arrived" striked a chord so deep in his heart

The subsequent talk post their match only further magnified his transition as Roshi's way of Budou/Martial Art is 180% to what Tien & Chiaotzu learnt frm Crane's School

His fight with Goku was necesarry to prove who's ultimate fighter. More than anything, he saw Goku & Krillin's (disciples of Muten Roshi) match which displayed a very "true" martial arts fight, unbounded by chains of hatred, anger, fear or revenge (traits which Crane Hermit implemented on Tien & Chiaotzu)

I really think its a gradual process, only without Tien being as assh*** like Veggie. Carryin his baggage over 3-4 sagas just to toss everything aside & become good guy by sacrificing himself.

Next to Piccolo, Tien's got best transition imo

If Goku's history weren't already set, Tenshinhan would've been a great rival to Goku. However, I think AT had already decided early on that Goku was not a normal human, maybe not even human at all.

This is before it's time, which means AT probably had something in store for Goku from the beginning.

Piccolo was just added in as a complimentary rival to Goku, although in the end it didn't turn out that way. Still, Piccolo was a much better rival to Goku than Ten.

On Tenshinhan though, I agree with OT that he had little impact after DB ended, pretty much after King Piccolo was killed imo.

Same thing resurfaces in Goku's fight against Piccolo Daimou

After surviving even after many assaults & high-impact blasts, a frustrated Daimou asked if Goku was even human

To which Goku (essentially Toriyama) casually replied that he always had same doubt. But considering how he has a "tail", he may not even be a human

Toriyama might have not decided Goku's history of being a Saiyan, or their Oozaru transformations playing major role in their planet trade bussiness THAT far ahead. But still, its quite interesting...

Well hey, he could've also made Tien an alien. He had the three eyes thing going on after all

Its a general misconception tbh

Even Oolong had pig face. Could he be an alien race that can shape-shift ala Oozaru?

Its not how it works. Just like Goku was inspired frm Wukong & Oolong frm Zhu Bajie, Tien musta been some loosely associated character frm Journey to the West

All I'm saying is you can't remove it as a possibility for AT to have done. He could've is all.

Tien may not have done much in Z, but he was still cool.
I do wish however that he did more, but at least he recognized that he wasn't a match for most foes in Z.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

He's my favorite character. All the humans (Krillin, Tien, Chiaotzu, Yamcha, Yajirobe) got screwed in Z, especially after the Saiyan saga. They should have gotten Kaio-Ken or something to allow them to stay relevant. I could have done without Trunks entirely, and as well as the fusion dance/potara and any Super Saiyan transformations after the first. I'd prefer the humans to be at least 80% of Piccolo at any point in the series. The show takes place on earth but there aren't any humans relevant to the important battles for the most part.

At least he got to mop up Burter and Jeice in Frieza saga filler. And the Tri-Beam is the coolest attack in the franchise by far.

Piccolo pulled off the stoic guy with the close relationship with a kid a lot better. Well, Toriyama actually bothered with Gohan whereas he pretty much gave up on Chiaotzu. Once you remember he also gave Yamcha's desire to get married and gave it to Krillin, it gets pretty obvious that him making stuff up resulted in superfluous characters getting phased out later.

He could've done something with him if his whole disdain for Vegeta actually went anywhere besides a passing mention here or there but Tien was firmly replaced by Piccolo as the stoic by that point.

I really liked Tien, he was my favorite of the Human characters. I wish Toriyama had done more with him.

His look, attitude, his fighting style, his moves...I thought he was perfect.

I was never really a fan. I thought he was somewhat interesting during his debut, but after that he became rather boring. It also doesn't help that he fell to the wayside rather early on.

He was just kind of there after the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. He didn't fill any pivotal role. He wasn't a Best Friend, or a Rival, or an Arch Nemesis, or a Love Interest. He was nothing but a body to add to the cannon fodder army.
