Crazy Awesome Legend

I discovered a few years ago that unlike in the UK and the United States, some countries have a very different attitude towards political satire. As in, you cannot openly mock government officials and you certainly can't do it on television. Some governments even own the media. Question is, why is it different everywhere?

We have it pretty non stop in the UK. There are endless television programs criticising and mocking the establishment as well as all the other forms of mass media. Are we just better able to laugh at ourselves? Nobody is expecting a revolt just because the Prime Minister allegedly skull f***ed a dead pig. Why do other countries seem to take themselves so seriously?

I've seen the politicians be mocked on TV a lot. Jon Stewart and Rick Mercer make their livings on mocking politicians in the US and Canada respectively y'know?

If I were togive an answer on why I imagine there to be a difference, then I'd say that it's because countries like ours value freedom of speech, a strong belief in criticising ideas, and are distrusting of anyone who ever so slightly resembles a dictator. If we were not allowed to make fun of them, then we wouldn't trust them; so they just have to put up with it whether they like it or not.

There seems to be a difference in the appreciation of certain values. For instance some places prefer their governments to look strong rather than trustworthy. You can't have as much satire in these countries because it undermines how supposedly infallible the system is.
