Marvel Comics' Axel Alonso on Civil War II: It's Iron Man vs. Captain Marvel

If you suspected Marvel Comics’ upcoming event Civil War II was hastily thrown together to tie-in with the momentum from Captain America: Civil War on the big screen, well, you’d be right. But that doesn’t mean the comic company isn’t trying to tell a fresh version of the hero vs. hero saga.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Marvel’s Editor in Chief, Axel Alonso, revealed that the idea came together in approximately 3-4 months — which is almost impossibly fast in the realm of comic books, especially when you’re talking about an event that will likely affect several different series as it tells its story (they typically take years of planning). But, as they were bouncing around ideas for the story that would become Civil War II, the team apparently figured out it was something worth doing, and worth doing very quickly to capitalize on the film’s release.

But the All New, All Different comic universe is a very different place, meaning this will almost certainly not be a beat-for-beat knockoff of the original. The biggest difference: Yes, Iron Man returns, but this time he’ll be facing off against Captain Marvel instead of Captain America. Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, has found herself in charge of the new-look Alpha Flight, which serves as the first line of defense against alien attack. So, whatever happens, Tony Stark apparently does something that puts them on very different sides of the line.

Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

“There’s a reason that Carol is a part of the opposition forces. It not only speaks to her character, but her new role in the Marvel universe. She’s the leader of Alpha Flight, which is Earth’s first line of defense from all incursions. As of today, she is a very powerful authoritative figure in the Marvel universe…

The way we look at it, we’re telling a movie that may come out in 10, 15 or 20 years. We’re telling the best stories we can. We’ve got an unlimited special-effects budget. We have tons of latitude creatively to bend, break and have fun and get people talking at the comic-book stores and beyond. We don’t feel that pressure [to match the movies]. We’re just having fun telling great stories.”

Having Iron Man face off with Captain Marvel certainly promises to be entertaining, and with Brian Michael Bendis scripting the story, you know it should be good. But that ultra-fast turnover time is still a bit disconcerting.

What do you think? Do we need another Civil War?

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.
