Dialogue in old comics

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I'm reading Crisis On Infinite Earths which came out in the mid-80s and I'm really struggling with the dialogue in it. It just feels really poor. Here's an example of what I mean:

"My shoulder - this thing just touched it, and my shoulder burns."

To me, that sounds like it's written by a kid, and that sort of writing makes up the majority of the book. I expected the art to be of less quality considering the improvements in technology (and I can put up with bad art anyway, since I'm more for the story than the art), but just because the comic is older shouldn't mean that the writing would be poor.

Not really a question, just an observation I guess. Anyone had similar thoughts? Or have I just picked a badly written comic (I've only read a few comics and the writing seems to be of a similar quality, except Grant Morrison's Animal Man, but he's one of the best comic book writers out now so it only makes sense he was ahead of his time).

"Then you've got the chance to do better next time."
"Next time?"
"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

That's a problem with a lot of old comics, the dialogue is really a b*** to get through even as late as the 80s.
