This weekend I finally got of my a*** and went to theaters too see the new Star Wars fill and to say the least it was one of the best films ive seen in years and quite possibly the most visually stunning movie I have ever seen. However, It does have some very minor cons. First of all, the movie tries a bit too much too be like Episode IV. I've watched the movie once and ive already seen too many similarities. The giant super weapon thing (Ill talk more about this later), the masked Sith character, one of the main characters escaping from a planet they have lived their entire life on, etc. It appeals a bit too much to the first movie and not enough too the prequels, which leads me to talk about the nostalgia factors. They weren't all bad, the movie seemed a bit drowned in nostalgia pieces though. Sometimes they work (For example when they took the Falcon, something that hasn't been seen sense 83') and sometimes they don't. One of the worst examples of this is how heavily the movie rely's on just the mention of none other than Luke Skywalker. Although his disappearance makes for a good story, this route seems very transparent to me and just looks like a business strategy to get people hyped for the next movie. My only major issue with this movie is its less then impressive soundtrack, excluding the remakes of the originals of course. The original trilogy had the best soundtrack of its time and was positively amazing. The prequels took this too a whole new level, producing some of the greatest masterpieces in not just film soundtracks but music history in itself (Don't get butthurt but the Prequel OST was far superior too the original). The OST for Episode VII was either generic bg music or honest-to-god plain annoying. Even the remakes weren't all that great, the re score of Binary Sunset was almost bad compared to the original. This is very disappointing because the soundtrack was arguably Star Wars' greatest aspect, for even the slightest flaws the OT had its score was flawless, same for the prequels. A personal issue I have with the film is the First Order Starbase, who the f*** thought of that? Seriously, what s***ty Disney employee thought it would be a good idea to bloat the Death Star and try to put one of the most iconic things of all time to shame? First of all, its ridiculously OP. Unessisarly OP in fact, obsorbing stars? Even with how advanced the Star Wars universe is its almost unbelievable. Many fans seem happy with the lore of the new movie describing what happened after the Battle of Endor, but I for one am not. The movie does a terrible job with exponential writing as they give little to no information about what exactly the 'New Republic' is. It absolutely baffles me is how the MAIN FOCUS of the OT and PT THE RESTORATION OF THE REPUBLIC is tossed aside in the new movie to make room for other s***. Ridiculous. There are too many good things about this movie to list, but I will say a few things I really enjoyed. First of all, loved the light saber lore. It was a great feeling when the realization that this light saber has been in every movie (Except Episode I i think) and has been passed down through Anakin and then Luke finally hit me. Also I liked the risk they took pushing the Jedi figure of the movie too a secondary position. It seemed the movie focused more on Fin than Rey, that was a good choice in my eyes. Although I do believe that he will eventually be pushed to the side as well in episodes VIII and IX. It was also refreshing to see a weak Sith-figure. Overall loved the movie. They took alot of risks with some of the decisions they made, and thats the best thing I think that Disney could have done for the film. Because thats exactly what George Lucas did in 1977, he took risks. And they all payed off, this trilogy may be the same way. Your opinions? |
