I wonder if it must be daunting for actors to play a role where they're going to be some kind of horrible person. Like in this movie Regression: Kind of mature synopsis The dad being played by Ethan Hawke. So yeah movies can definitely ruin actors careers but do they often make people dislike the actor for who/what they portrayed? Like if people see that movie and then associate Ethan with...that, could they come to dislike him regardless of talent? Actors can obviously be associated with roles and genre's quite a bit, if Arnie was in a movie that didn't involve guns, explosions and some sort of action people would be wondering wtf was going on. I of course don't mean just actors playing villains, they can be well loved from that even if they were utter bastard characters, I mean when they do more...dark and creepy things. Would people love Chris Hemsworth as much if he was the lead actor in another Human Centipede for instance? |

The only people I can see disliking an actor because they played a bad character are kids. Maybe some adults that have a mental disability which makes it hard for them to separate reality from fiction. Other than that, I'm pretty sure most people realise a character is in no way representative of an actor. |

I think it takes more than film for an actor to get a bad reputation. The Rock starred in The Tooth fairy and his career is stronger than ever. Whereas Nicholas Cage hasn't done anything good in years. Now people think he's a joke. Dicaprio started the opposite way. He was in all this awful s*** like The Beach, Don Plum and Romeo and Juliet. His rep really suffered. But then he did Catch me If you Can and The Aviator and people started to take him seriously again. |

I would doubt it, I love David Tenant and he played the Purple Man in Jessica Jones. If they can pull off the roll I don't really care about their other roles, and I don't think others will care either, just look at Heath Ledger. It modifies initial perception, but the movie will speak for itself. Edited by Tinny, Jan 23 2016, 11:15 PM.

It's hard to ruin my perception of certain actors. A better Mr Freeze than the original. |

I guess ruin might be a strong word for what I'm getting at, alter is better. Like when someone gets arrested for a horrible crime and people in the neighbourhood are all "Wow I never knew he was...that kind of person" But then they're found not guilty, even though they never done anything people still look down on them a bit, like just maybe they did or would do the thing. That kind of...distaste but towards an actor who played a really awful character just too well. On the other side of things it must be a hard choice to make for an actor, who has no iconic role. No matter what Arnie does he will always be "The Terminator" But imagine being "The guy who played the creepy paedophile in that one movie" |

I haven't watched an Arnold movie without Arnold not being entertaining in it. He's always great, that accent of his is magnificent. |

Wait do you mean getting pigeon holed into a role? "Oh he's the guy that does this role best, we're gonna try to get him to do this and just this role" Like that is what you meant? |

More like public view of someone. Like how people will always be hyped about someone like Anthony Hopkins being a bad guy, 'cause he's a damn good bad guy in films. What's it like when people are thinking "He makes a really good paedophile/rapist/sadist character"? Could it not skew how someone sees an actor? The same happens with positive things anyway, even if Jason Statham was a complete wuss his movies make him a certified badass for all his action roles, when in reality he could be completely the opposite and would sooner cry in a corner than fight anyone. |

Well yes but to those who take even a small look at his life see that he was one of the nicest people in the buisness as well, complete opposite to his acting roles. I don't think that happens, maybe to the uneducated and those who don't ever look at the actor. But anyone who takes a look at so much as an interview with the actor or random pages can see that they're very separate from their roles, and that this does little to effect or reflect on the person they are. Closest thing to it would be "he's good at pretending to be a bad guy" or something like that, obviously more focused than that, but again that's all it really gets. Their persona as a real person is separate from their ability to portray certain types of people as an actor. |

Leonardo DiCaprio's first role was in Critters 3 (which the post-popularity box art so proudly shows), and he's still on top of the world. Though that could be because nobody's seen the movie... If my favorite actor suddenly stars in a terrible movie like another Twilight sequel, I won't hate that actor. I'll hate the movie and refuse to watch it, but I'll still watch the next thing they do. |
