My CPU just over heated

I was playing an old pc game, minding my own business when I got a temperature warning and then just after I saved the game my pc shut down to protect itself.

What could have caused this?

I have ordered some heat paste in case it's to do with that. I have also scanned my computer with AVG and Malware Bytes and my fans are set on turbo mode. Could it have been a Windows update in the background? They sometimes stress my pc a bit.

thats what i dont like in 400W cpus anf gpus, they overheat every time they could. Thermal paste reapply every single months and fan cleaning every other week.

What is your cpu brand?. Guess it is either the thermal paste which could possibly last for 5 years if it is the stock paste or IDK

I'm guessing it's the stock paste. I'm using a 3.5ghz second generation i7. Not over clocked.

I just uninstalled some software I don't quite trust as well. Just in case they were causing some unwanted background nonsense.

I always check it every minute, because I know that, for no goddamn reason it gets hot as all hell.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

My CPU has been idle at 43 all afternoon since the crash. I'm now wondering if it was just the game I was playing. I messed around with the .ini file a while back and that might have been what was causing my computer to go nuts when starting up the game. I've reinstalled the vanilla version of this game without any mods or anything but I haven't tested it yet. I also tried Dark Souls out for 15 minutes and my cpu never exceeded 55c. Plus I've disabled AVG in case it tried to download more updates without me knowing.

Didn't help. For some reason this game has become very cpu heavy.

43C is pretty hot for idle. I'd check to make sure that the fan is spinning, and definitely replace the thermal paste if it is. CPUs should never overheat, even under constant load. Are you using the heatsink/fan that came with the processor or something else?

I'm using the fan/heatsink that came with it plus a chassis fan as well. The CPU fan is at 1480 rpm idle and the chassis is at 2109rpm. My CPU fan jumps to around 2500 rpm when it needs to cool the thing down.

Just one fan on the case? It would be a good idea to add a second one, especially if you have a 390 dumping heat in there now. It's good to have two in the front, one in the back. But you generally want at least one exhaust and one intake. Intake is generally more important though.

My case doesn't support any more fans.

Sometimes, just taking off the side panel can be a big improvement to temperatures, especially with an open-air style cooler on the graphics card, and as a last resort, you can point a desk fan at it. Might try something like that.

What case do use? Out of curiosity.

An old hp pavilion a6421.uk. My board wouldn't fit in my old case so I had to use this one that was laying around.

Played the game on windowed mode. No temp increase at all. Just goes nuts when I run at full screen.

I see. Well, taking the side panel off/using a box fan might be the best solution we can get for that case, aside from cutting holes in it.

Found a mod for the game so now I can run it on fullscreen with no issues.

Question, how come I can play over an hour of The Witcher III and not have my CPU temp go above 55, but I can't watch ten minutes of Gravity Falls on full screen in 420p without it going up to 60? Is it Firefox related?
