Perhaps it's not nearly this simple but if you fed two rabbits, male and female a little bit of meat every day and then bred them, then fed their offspring and their mates a little bit more and so on, would we eventually get carnivorous rabbits? Not just rabbits but any herbivore. I have a feeling that evolution is too complex for this method of selective breeding to work as intended. |

Well, yeah, evolution could.![]() But that's a pretty sick idea that I wouldn't recomment scientists to test. Because as awesome and rad as a flesh-eating rabbit sounds, it's just an experiment that is taking a piss on nature, and that's not right. |

A better question is, why would you want to make herbivores carnivorous? Wouldn't life be more pleasant for more creatures if there were less carnivores and omnivores? But no, it wouldn't work. Their digestive organs might adapt—after a very long time, and after a lot of death—to digest the food you're subjecting them to, but they won't adapt to be able to hunt and acquire meat on their own. They'll be omnivores at best, and only so they might live longer on your sadistic, and cruel diet. |

Theoretically anything can eat anything to survive, but like everyone else mentioned, some digestive tracts are only going to work as nature intended. Meat is a bit tougher to digest and provides different nutrients. Besides, feeding them straight off wouldn't work. Maybe they would take it, if they were starving. However the odds that a second generation could live on the meat is almost nothing. That's a long term evolutionary process. Also, how would these animals get meat? Most herbivores don't have binocular or color vision, hunting would be pretty damned hard. Or the appropriate sense of smell for that matter. Granted Dogs do it, but their teeth at least have the capability of shredding meat. Hell, cows are lucky they can even digest grass, and they need 4 stomachs to do it. To accelerate anything like this there would have to be a hell of a mutation or cataclysm I'd say. |
