Crazy Awesome Legend

Anyone watched this yet? It's a multi part drama set in Russia during the Napoleonic wars and based on the book of the same name. Seems like it's going to get pretty good after quite a slow start. Positives: Great cast including Jim Broadbent and Brian Cox. Most of the actors who I have not heard of before are decent as well. Particularly the main character and the dark haired fellow who seems to be his best friend. Fantastic music. I did not expect a period drama like this to have such good music. It's a mixture of Russian male choir music and a very bass oriented style. Seems to alternate between them. Cool battles. There were a few scenes that were really good. Cannons blowing people up, a scene where a messenger on horseback is racing across the battlefield between the two lines right between the crossfire and this great scene involving a cavalry charge. Well directed. You can just tell the director knew what they were doing. Some of the shots were pretty decent. Negatives: First thirty minutes was a bit slow. Could have shown more of the battles. Some of the acting (Mostly from the female cast members) was a bit amateurish. Some of the scenes which weren't on the battlefield were quite boring. This sounds like a contradiction but even though it felt slow, the plot seemed rushed at the same time. I've never read the book so I don't know how it's paced but my instinct was telling me that things were being brushed over. Generally it was better than I expected and has a nice, sleek look to it. I like it when period dramas try to be a bit different and I think this mostly succeeds in doing so. |

I'm saving it all for one big viewing, been told that it's a great show and a solid adaptation so I'm looking forward to it, and I'm thankful for the pro/con list. I'll probably not put it too high in my priorities going by your comments. |
