That stormtrooper moment with Rey has to be one of the funniest moments I've seen in any of the Star Wars movies. Though I did see it coming, they gave the stormtrooper a super silly voice that matched the moment.

Also, is Rey supposed to be spelled like that? Because Rey is just "king" in spanish, I would've expected a bit more originality.

I think talking with Emmeth helped me like this movie a bit more. But here's my initial thoughts on the film. I was kind of harsh, but it was mainly because everyone seemed so in awe of it.

Yeah you are way too harsh there. Like because it didn't fit your expectations you rated it down. No it wasn't as good as Empire Strikes Back or Star Wars and a lot of the points you raised were fair. However none of those things make it a bad film. On the contrary despite its flaws; and there are a fair few, it still managed to be a decent film. Maybe not a classic but still decent.

I didn't like it at all mostly because its KOTOR if it was written by a fanboy who only knows surface level Star Wars. Let me explain, KOTOR takes a lot of the same tropes from the OT and applies comic book logic to it in that it takes a familiar story, looks at it from new angles and makes it fresh & interesting again. This isn't like that.

Not only does it blatantly copy from the OT, every single mother f***ing frame of it feels like fan w***ing to the extreme and for a guy like me who doesn't care about the OT, it was obnoxious as all hell. The plot lacked a lot of urgency, besides Poe none of the new characters got my attention with some of Rey's magic asspulls getting on my nerves.

If you're some one who just thinks Star Wars is the OT, you'll like this one. If you're someone who's seen the OT formula done better and in a fresh way or just knows Star Wars is capable of a lot better & more varied types of stories both pre and post Disney, you're gonna hate it.

I'd like to point out that reviews have given the movie a solid 8/10 overall. If so many people agree then it must be a hit, even if some hardcore Star Wars fanboys don't like it. They are definitely in the minority, but I can also see their points because I know a lot about the lore. I've read comics, stories, seen tv-shows and played some of the games. Everything can't be called 'canon', but this movie is definitely a part of the original timeline and will be as such considered 'canon'.

Oh yeah, I think it was a good film stand alone. I just didn't like it for an episode 7. Though like I said, Kim helped me think better of the villain. He does have some potential.

With Disney, only the movies are canon now, and anything that is related to them, such as the new comics.
Basically, EU isn't a thing anymore. Shame.

Which is something else I really dislike. I love the Lore so much.

Which doesn't make sense to me because I believe Darth Plagueis(Sidious' master) is mostly on the Expanded Universe(not canon anymore) while he's also referenced in Episode III(canon). How does that work?

The character is canon, the things he did in the EU are not. Pretty simple really. Kind of like all of the other characters that are in the movies and were expanded on in the EU, the characters still exist but the stuff they did outside the movies are not canon.

Obviously he is considered canon because he was mentioned, but anything he did in the EU isn't canon.

I'd say this is my 2nd favourite Star Wars film after Empire Strikes Back, J.J. Abrams did a fantastic job directing, and I thought all the new characters were great... The film has had pretty good reviews so far, so the majority like it. I've only seen a minority to bash it.

Personally I thought it was the best film of the series, but then I don't really care for Star Wars and I also have only seen this one in the cinema, which makes such a difference to your appreciation I think. I agree with much of what's been said already, it borrows far too heavily from the OT, feeling more like a reboot than a sequel at times, but in fairness the last time they tried to do something bold and new with the film franchise the fans butchered it, so I can see exactly why they were so cautious.

I was so surprised to see Domnhall Gleeson as Hux in this, I had no idea he was in the film and was so happy, love that guy. I hope his rivalry with Kylo is maintained through the films. And as others have said I hope to hear a LOT more about Snoke. Heard people throwing around the theory that he's Plagueis, could be interesting.

I agree. I can kinda see why they made the choices they made. Plus I was mainly harsh to play devil's advocate since everyone seemed to happy afterwards and I felt like they were so hyped up they saw no problems. But my main points remain still

Then why call it the best?
