I don't know which sites those are, sorry.

I've heard good things about microcenter, though. Sometimes they have really nice deals on motherboard/CPU combos. It wouldn't hurt to go down there take a look. You said you lived near one.

BF = Black Friday and CB = Cyber Monday. :p

Say what?!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-970-04G-P4-3978-KR-4GB-FTW-GAMING-w-ACX-2-0-Whisper-Silent-C-/291356652877?hash=item43d635b54d:g:5X4AAOSw2s1Uum5S

Trending at: $374.99

However, a B-stock is over $100 cheaper?!

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-2978-RX

What?!?!?!?

-Between these two, is the $70 increase in price really worth it? They're both 4GB.

Oh yeah, duh. No, I've never actually searched for deals on those particular day.

Video RAM has nothing to do with processing speed. In terms of hardware, the GTX 970 1664 processors, while the 960 has 1024. That's where the difference is. You just need a 4GB minimum for a consistent experience on both cards (if the game needs more than 2GB of RAM, and you don't have it, you'll get really bad stutters). RAM doesn't actually affect speed.

Take a look at this chart, it's a summary of performance of these cards in a 10+ game benchmarking suite:

Posted Image

You can see that the 970, on average, is 77% faster than a 960, though this is a 960 2GB. They haven't tested 4GB models, but the gap should remain sizeable even if there were a 4GB model on that chart.

I think that B-stock deal is just really good; there's nothing fishy about it. EVGA is one of the most reliable distributors of NVIDIA graphics cards. Lots of people swear by them.

Woah, a GTX 780 TI is better than the GTX 970? Give me a moment to look at prices.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-780-TI-/262148959864?hash=item3d094bae78:g:41sAAOSw~bFWPqoL

What do you think? $50 more for the 780 TI? Is it worth it compared to the GTX 970 for $250?

Only by a very slight margin, and you'll be losing a half gig of video RAM, (it's advertised as 4GB, but the 970 has 3.5GB, not a big deal at 1080p) but it would be a very similar experience. However, it is substantially faster in Fallout 4, though both hand in good (for Fallout 4) performance.

I don't think EVGA has any 780 Tis in its B-stock, and on ebay they cost about the same as a 970.

I don't think so. The 970 is basically the same performance, more video RAM, cheaper, newer, less power consumption, better overclocking, etc.

Hmm, alright. Then it's not really worth it. Damn the the $250 970 is such a good deal compared to everything else that I'm seeing. Do you know if shipping is free on EVGA's site?

No, but, they offer UPS ground (1-3 days) for a mere $5.

The one bad thing is that you'll have to pay $20 in sales tax, so the order comes to $275 in total. Still better than the 780 Ti IMO.

Wow, what a deal breaker! :p

That's awesome! Then, my total for the 970 and the PSU is going to be $310 shipped. MB is $69. $379 :'(

Now, all that's remaining is the CPU. Xeon, I7-4790, or I-4790K depending on price.

Damn tax...

If you don't want to spend that much, an i5-4460 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i5-4460S-LGA-1150-Haswell-Quad-Core-2-9-GHz-Desktop-Processor-CPU-/281860201789?hash=item41a02d5d3d:g:4FoAAOSw14xWFrN0) for $160 would work as well (it wouldn't be as good as the Xeon/i7, but it would still be a huge improvement over what you have), you could also consider that B-stock 960.

An i5 + 960 4GB would still be a huge upgrade.

Strike that, that's a low power 4460. This one isn't, but it's more expensive.

970 + PSU is $310 shipped
960 + PSU is $260 shipped
MB is $69 shipped
Xeon/I7-4790 is about $250 shipped
I5-4460 is $182 shipped

Cheapest bundle would be $511
Most expensive bundle would be $629

For only a $118 difference, I'd rather go with the best bundle....

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend a 4460S anyway. That's basically a 4460 with a reduced clock speed and lower power consumption.

But for the PSU, You could get that from EVGA too ($43 shipped): http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=100-B1-0600-RX

EVGA power supplies are very reliable. I own one myself.

But yeah, $629 for those parts is a great price.

That's the PSU that I have in cart with the 970 right now. You linked it earlier. $630... Well, if I'm going to spending that much, I'm going to give you one more opening. I'm willing to spend up to $700, so what can be swapped around to make that extra $70 worthwhile?

Hmmm. Well, if you have an extra $70, I might recommend replacing your RAM (it should be easily resellable btw). What's your current RAM speed, do you know?

DDR3-1333, DDR3-1600, etc?

If you don't know, this tool should tell you: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Here's mine, as an example:

Posted Image

I overclocked my DDR3-1866 memory to DDR3-2000, so it shows up as 4000 MHz because they're configured as dual channel, which doubles the theoretical throughput.

According to CPU-Z (I have heard about this before!), I have the following:

DDR3 4096 GB x4
PC3-12800H (800 MHz)
1600 CL9 Series
XMP 1.3

NB Frequency: 1499.7 MHz
DRAM Frequency: 799.8 MHz

Ah, DDR3-1600. Okay, then you could do with a RAM speed upgrade.

This chart says it all:

Posted Image

It'll cost you slightly more than $70, but I would highly recommend this set of RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231673&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

It's one of the cheapest 16GB sets and it's DDR3-2400, which, as you can see from that chart, should give a pretty big performance increase. Also it demonstrates why the FX-8350 kind of stinks.

Reselling all the stuff you have, I would expect $100+ from your motherboard/CPU as a combo, $50+ for the GTX 650 and $50+ from your 16GB of RAM (that RAM'll only cost you $20 net or so). Not too bad.
