Guerillas are kryptonite to the American army

What do you mean? America hasn't lost a battle in Vietnam against the Vietcong. They lost the public support and confidence because they lied to the American people. I don't remember anybody saying America lost any battles in Vietnam even when the Vietcongs launched a surprised attack.
I know, but it seems that every time we fight guerillas, we end up failing to establish any actual control over the region for any variety of reasons. Maybe kryptonite is the wrong word, try bad luck charm.
