How does it even work? If you're not the strongest wouldn't it be a disadvantage if a stronger foe starts to torture you? What if you're body is 100% destroyed? Your soul would be alive but it'll just empty right? Like you're just floating while no one can see you? What if you have a permanent pain? Like how exactly does being immortal work? |

Ask Garlic Jr. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

We really don't know the mechanics behind Garlic Jr's immortality. To me, it just looks like some kind of zombified state that allows him to continue operating even when his body has been mutilated in some way while making a conscious effort to regenerate from the injury. If his body were molecularised, what would happen then? I suspect it's as you said, TC. He would simply be floating around as an incorporeal spirit; anchored to the living world. The most prevalent example of a character who achieved immortality that comes to mind is Ban from Nanatsu no Taizai. Not only is he capable of regenerating from any kind of bodily trauma, but he never ages and has infinite stamina. No matter how much damage you inflict, he auto-regenerates without suffering any kind of stamina loss. That sounds pretty scary when you think about how he can pretty much outlast anyone when it comes to endurance and render all of their efforts useless. Unless you have some kind of means to temporarily negate his regeneration or atomise him to the point where there's no trace left, he'll eventually begin to outpace you no matter what. We see this with his battle against Meliodas at the tournament during the Byzel arc. Meliodas could only win by tapping into his demon powers and forcing a ring out. If immortality in DBZ were anything like how NnT depicts it then I can understand why characters would want it. Edited by Thiln, Nov 1 2015, 12:08 AM.

It's entirely possible that "immortality" means that you can't die due to old age. I always thought Roshi was immortal because of his old age, but he can still die if he gets killed by someone. Similar to the Homunculi in Fullmetal Alchemist. They can die if they use their philosopher's stone up, but they don't age (Bradley and Ling aside) and can't die due to old age. |

The way Vegeta speaks of it, it should mean you literally can't die. |
