Sidious made the right move by liquoring him up and killing him in his sleep. Since Plagueis was quite the Force scientist and manipulator, I think he (or his soul or spirit) has been hiding out in the darkness the entire time, pulling Sidious' strings, as he always did. I think Plagueis is the supreme Sith Lord, who could even destroy Yoda at the right moment, for the galactic takeover.

He's grandmaster by virtue of being the strongest guy born during a millennia where there was almost no fighting to be done. Once it did start, he was still fairly skilled but Yoda is way to repetitive and by the books where as other duelists of lesser power left him in the dust by adapting. Cyborg Vader is like that, he stopped just brute forcing through everything and began strengthening his force abilities and making himself a more versatile fighter. There's a good reason Vader is an 8 to Sidious' 10.
