Instead of Super Saiyan...

 What if Gohan only ever increased the power of his base strength? Instead of making him just another Super Saiyan, he's constantly in a sort of Mystic or Ultimate state where he can't transform, but his base power keeps on growing to insane levels the more he trains, ultimately culminating with it all being released with Old Kai's ritual.

 Well he wouldn't have the strain of needing to maintain a transformation. Plus, there's the potential for him to learn Kaioken and multiply his power anyway. Gohan might have been able to make an impression against Beerus if he had access to x20.
